Ask Dr. VICTORIA H. MEDVEC for one word that defines her and the answer is: fearless. As CEO of Medvec & Associates and author of her newly published book, Negotiate Without Fear: Strategies and Tools to Maximize Your Outcomes (John Wiley & Sons), Medvec says, “My style is to be fearless—in negotiating, building new business, working with clients, and seeking new opportunities.” At her firm, she and her team advise CEOs and other senior leaders on mergers, acquisitions, large customer contracts, and significant partnership agreements. They also teach negotiation and decision making strategies to companies around the globe. Many of the firm’s clients are Fortune 500 companies as well as smaller, fast-growing organizations. Notable clients include Google, Cisco, McDonald’s, IBM, Amgen, Microsoft, Pfizer, and McKesson. Medvec’s fearlessness has been well earned, with a PhD in psychology from Cornell University and 26 years as a professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, where she serves as the Adeline Barry Davee Professor of Management and Organizations. She is also the co-founder and Executive Director for the Kellogg Center for Executive Women. Not surprisingly, she was raised by a strong woman. “I dedicated my book to my mom. My mother, Margery Husted, has been a huge inspiration to me throughout my life and has been my biggest cheerleader as I advanced in my career,” she says. In Medvec’s book, she shares the negotiation strategies her clients have found most valuable for the past 20 years. She vividly highlights how readers can use these strategies in every negotiation they encounter, whether it is at work (negotiating with a customer or supplier), in their personal life (buying a house or car), or when they are negotiating for themselves in their own careers. She hopes her book will both inspire readers to become fearless negotiators and teach them how to do this.
