If walls could talk, then Winnetka’s 884 Higginson Road would tell the tale of a family whose commitment to quality is as equally important as creating a livable, lovable place to call home.
While current owners Kerry and Sarah Wood may be best known for his successful career in major league baseball, their home embraces the real values that this influential couple holds dear. Their strong commitment to philanthropy and their deep devotion to raising their three children is reflected in the thoughtful and personalized details of this Heritage Builders Luxury Home.
“I absolutely loved working on this home because the family was committed to ensuring each and every detail fit their individual needs,” designer Julia Buckingham explains. “Kerry and Sarah love to entertain and they cherish family. They wanted their home to be a place to relax, enjoy family and friends, and build long-lasting memories.”
For Buckingham, transforming the Wood home presented an interesting juxtaposition between the home’s stoic exterior and the wish to make the home a place to play.
To make for a subtle transition from outdoor to indoor, Buckingham suggested a blue-gray exterior sash box window, giving visitors the first clue that something intriguing and joyful awaits them inside.
Upon entering, continued snippets of grays and blues, particularly in the window dressings, rugs, and throw pillows, provide a natural flow. Around the bend, a sizable kitchen with an impressive 13-foot kitchen island reflects Sarah’s love for cooking and entertaining. Upon closer look, the island is capped with an elegant, high-quality quartz countertop, infused with the same speckles of grays, blues, and silvers seen elsewhere in the home. Adding a completely unique flair to the kitchen is a cozy custom-designed eating nook, where the family gathers for those relaxed, everyday meals. The nook is bordered by sizable windows, allowing natural light to warm the room. Eye-catching window dressings enhance the space, blending
tradition with a whimsical feel that Buckingham says defines the entire home.
When the weather cooperates, the indoor eating and entertaining space naturally flows outdoors. An impressive garden added by the Wood family, offers homegrown fresh produce and easy access to the kitchen. In summer, dinners are often under the pergola where a nearby grill, smoker, and coal-fire pizza oven offer plenty of opportunities to cook outdoors. An al fresco sitting area infuses the same blue and gray color scheme seen within the home and the nearby fireplace extends cozy evenings into the fall.
Of particular interest to Realtor Jena Radnay of @Properties is the lower level. She explains how the downstairs quarters are beyond compare. “While a signature of the Heritage homes is lower-level living, Kerry and Sarah took that concept and hit a grand slam, making their home unlike any other. One room contains all of Kerry’s memorabilia, while next door a comfortable, cozy theater room provides an escape for the whole family. Essentially, the lower-level is a complete destination with fitness room, sauna, and indoor basketball court. Each and every detail is exquisite, reflective of the family’s wish for their home to be their haven,” Radnay says.
Perhaps the most unique feature of the space down below is a colorful and lively craft room, where Sarah and the children love to create and play. “Sarah was highly involved in the craft room, seeing it as a wonderful place for her children to get lost in imagination. There is a place for every pencil, every crayon, every piece of tape. The room is colorful and provides a surprise to all who visit the Wood’s home,” Buckingham explains. “In addition, Sarah is one who takes time and care to select and wrap presents for others. The full-functioning wrapping-paper station means her goal to wrap each gift with love is possible.”
Tying it all together are the impressively high ceilings that Kerry requested, allowing for ample light to flood the home. It is this feature, along with so many others that led Radnay to define 884 Higginson as “the happiest home on the block.”
