A new year creates a new opportunity for cancer research through the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation and three distinguished doctors looking for a “Clue to a Cure” on the North Shore. UCCRFAB’s long-standing organization celebrates 67 years of supporting cancer research at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2018 and plans to show guests a spectacular time at its annual gala.
Founded in 1951, the Board raised $3,000 in its first year, but since inception UCCRFAB has grown those profits to over $3 million. Providing essential funding for research of cancers that affect all ages.
UCCRFAB President Lisa Hoffman has a special interest in the research. She joined the Board five years ago after her sister’s second diagnosis of breast cancer at the University of Chicago Medical Center. With a heavy heart, Hoffman fortuitously received a call from a friend about joining the board. “It felt like fate,” Hoffman explains. Hoffman is proud
to be an active member and feels empowered to use her energy in a productive way.
Today’s Board is comprised of approximately 30 women who actively work toward raising funds for the selected research doctors. Each doctor receives funds for three years. UCCRFAB has chosen to support the research of Drs. Mark Applebaum, Nita Karnik Lee, and Jane Churpek during this year.
Hoffman describes the three experts, “Mark Applebaum, MD, is an expert in childhood cancers, including neuroblastoma. His research focuses on using large genomic data sets to stratify patients and develop specific strategies that will ultimately improve outcomes while minimizing risk. Nita Karnik Lee, MD, MPH, treats women with gynecologic malignancies. Specifically, her research focuses on improving survivorship and quality-of-life for patients with ovarian, uterine, and cervical cancer, and testing new therapies. Jane Churpek, MD, specializes in blood cancers and diseases of the bone marrow and is identifying novel inherited gene mutations that put people at risk for developing blood cancers.”
The 2018 gala, chaired by Kim Warren-Kirincic and Carolyn Rutstein, will incorporate an art deco theme with the classic mystery board game, Clue. The chairs including Auction Chair Beth Aldrich, President Lisa Hoffman, and committee members Jennifer McCarty, Barb Sheridan, Steph Cohen, and Carol Miller have secured the stunning penthouse ballroom of the DoubleTree North Shore Hotel, lively entertainment, and extraordinary prizes for live and silent auctions. Guests are encouraged to join in the festivities by dressing in creative cocktail attire with an emphasis on a roaring 20s party in Paris theme.
The Board will also host its annual Spring Luncheon featuring keynote speaker and sponsored researcher, Dr. Jane Churpek, on April 6, 2018 at The Glen View Club.
