For this issue’s fashion story, we were inspired by the phenomenal South Shore Cultural Center, a Chicago landmark and one of the Chicago Park District’s most significant historical landmarks.
Built in 1906 and conceived as a country club on Chicago’s south shore, the Center boasts 58 acres of prime real estate along the shoreline of Lake Michigan and serves as a host of beautiful spaces. Although the Center is now open to the public, it wasn’t always that way. In the 1960s, the club fell into disrepair and was effectively abandoned until 1974 when it was purchased by the Chicago Park District. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and completely renovated in 1984. In 2004, the SSCC was recognized as a Chicago Landmark.
Currently, in addition to hosting special events, the SSCC offers a variety of cultural programs and classes for all ages in dance, music, art, health, culinary arts, after-school, fitness, and more. The SSCC is also home to the Washburne Culinary Institute as well as Parrot Cage Restaurant, a 50-seat dining experience featuring international cuisine. It’s also an absolutely gorgeous place to hold a special event—the Dining Room, where we shot this story, was the site of President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama’s wedding reception! Furthermore, the Solarium features picturesque views of the surrounding grounds, and the majestic Paul Robeson Theatre has hosted a wide variety of events, including operas, elaborate fund-raisers, and talent shows.
Additionally, the SSCC also offers a nine-hole golf course, beach, nature sanctuary, butterfly garden, and open space for picnics and walks. The onsite horse stable is currently used by the Chicago Police Department.
