It Happened At The Worlds Fair
The Joffrey Ballet presents a Chicago-themed version of The Nutcracker. Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon returns The Joffrey Ballet this month with a version of a holiday classic that once again pays homage to Chicago’s World’s Fair of 1893. When the Chicago-themed version debuted last year, on the 125th anniversary of the Chicago World’s Fair, Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashely Wheater said it was one of her proudest moments to create this original interpretation with Wheeldon. “The Joffrey Ballet’s holiday gift to Chicago is a Nutcracker that the city can call its own, one that tells the story of Chicagoans and the magic of family,” she said. A ballet in two acts, The Nutcracker opens in Chicago on Christmas Eve, 1892, mere months before the opening of the 1893 World’s Fair—a marvel unlike anything the city has ever seen. Wheeldon’s American tale relocates Marie and her immigrant family and opens as young Marie and her mother, a sculptress creating the Fair’s iconic Statue of the Republic, host a festive Christmas Eve celebration. After a surprise visit from the mysterious Great Impresario, creator of the Fair, Marie embarks on a whirlwind adventure with the Nutcracker Prince through a dreamlike World’s Fair. The Nutcracker kicks off the holiday season November 30 at the historic Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 East Congress Parkway in Chicago, with performances running through the rest of the year. Count Your Blessings
During this month of giving thanks we were excited to learn about Oak Brook-based MADE AS INTENDED (“MAI”)’s inaugural “Say Thank You Challenge.” Creator of the popular Blessing Bracelet, MAI is giving away 16 “Forever” diamond pave bracelets to #madeasintendedthankyou posts with the most likes, and $500 cash prizes to four of their gratitude recipients from now through Thanksgiving. Challenge participants may enter on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook by posting a photo of the person they are thanking, along with a thank you message; posting a 60-second or less video thanking someone; or posting a photo of a “Say Thank You” postcard (available with MAI purchases and at select stores where blessing bracelets are carried). “So often, we don’t express our gratitude to each other, and in many cases, only realize that when it’s too late,” says founder Dawn Sprong. “Saying ‘thank you’ to someone is an expression of kindness, that also opens us up to receiving more of what we want in life. With this challenge, we want to see many people spreading a positive message across social media.” For more information, visit madeasintended.com/contest.
What did you have visions of dancing through your head this holiday season? Whatever it may be, Burr Ridge Village Center is eager to please with a new pop-up storefront concept for aspiring shop owners called “ShopDreams.” The concept will go live at the Burr Ridge Village Center this month with plans to expand to other properties in 2020. “ShopDreams” offers premium storefront sites in the Burr Ridge property with short-term, 30- to 60-day pop-up leases. With its established location and short lease, the model is designed to serve aspiring entrepreneurs and e-commerce operators who dream of opening their own brick-and-mortar store but fear the long-term commitment of lengthy leases and hefty investments. After the pop up lease term is completed, the retailer can explore longer term leases and permanent space. We are excited to offer this opportunity to so many people who have a dream to be a shop owner. Burr Ridge Village Center is home to anchor stores such as Cooper Hawk, The Hampton Social, Lifetime Fitness, and the Kohler Waters Spa. We can’t think of better company to try out a shop of one’s own. For more information regarding space availability and lease details contact Ramzi Hassan at [email protected]
