There’s never been a better time to be a wine lover.
From fundraisers for our favorite nonprofits to restaurants offering sommelier-curated tastings for the most discriminating palate, it seems like the entire Chicago area is suddenly becoming “uncorked.”
Now we can add Hinsdale to that list.
“Wine walks are popping up all over the Midwest in communities just like Hinsdale, so we felt it was important to bring this new event to town,” explains Anna Martch, economic development and communications specialist for the Village of Hinsdale and one of many people who made the Thursday, October 17 inaugural Hinsdale Wine Walk a reality. “Participants will get to sample wine and stop in to the wonderful shops Hinsdale has to offer.”
A joint effort by the Village of Hinsdale and the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce, the walk will take participants on a “sip and shop” tour of downtown retailers. Tickets are $35 each, with proceeds benefitting the Wellness House in Hinsdale.
Martch and her colleagues at the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce say this is exactly the kind of event local retailers have been wanting to do for years.
“I came to the Hinsdale Chamber two years ago and pushed to create this new event along with Chamber members,” explains Claudia Thornton, Chamber marketing director. “Now we are happy that this has finally come to fruition.”
To say it was a community effort is an understatement.
“The event was organized by a group of business owners in town who gladly welcomed it,” adds Martch. “Business owners helped the Village and the Chamber make key decisions regarding the event to ensure all goes smoothly.”
Thornton says the event is so popular already that it’s attracting new members to the Chamber. Each stop on the tour, which starts at 4:30 p.m., will include a wine tasting tailored to the business. Check-in is at the Hinsdale Wine Shop, where participants can pick up their souvenir glass, lanyard, and map of participating stops. (Note that ID’s will be checked.)
Andrea Kaspar, store manager at J.McLaughlin and member of the Hinsdale Wine Walk committee, says she’s been talking to Chamber members about a wine walk since she took over the store in November 2018.
“Wine walks have been so successful in neighboring towns. Having a wine walk in Hinsdale will give people in the community a chance to have a fun night out with friends, taste some new wines, and shop in their favorite stores—as well as stop in at retailers they may have never visited before,” says Kaspar. “In addition, by participating in the Wine Walk, they also give back to the Wellness House.”
Retailers were so excited about the walk that all available spots filled up as soon as it was announced, she adds. The Village and the Chamber worked together to open a few new spots (the list is at 23 businesses, as of press time).
“Businesses are excited to show off their stores,” says Martch. “The Hinsdale Wine Shop is excited to highlight different wines and participants are excited to have a new experience in town.”
Sounds like a win-win for all. Kaspar agrees.
“As a retailer, I’m looking forward to seeing some of our customers enjoying a fun shopping night out in town,” she says. “I’m also excited to introduce our store to those in the community who may not have ever shopped with us before. Everyone we have talked to about this event has been so thrilled that this is happening.”
