Liz Yarger moved to Hinsdale in October 2018 with her husband, Heath. The couple met while studying at Purdue University. They moved to Chicago together after graduation and got married soon after. A native of the Western Suburbs, Yarger fell in love with Hinsdale when her dad moved with his wife and kids. “The culture and community feel of Hinsdale is unlike any other,” she says. “When my husband and I starting talking about finding a place to settle down and start a family, Hinsdale was the perfect fit.” Yarger works in the Human Resources and Technology Consulting practice for HUB International, where for the last 5 years she’s led the sales team in the growth and development of the practice. Here are some of this busy go-getter’s favorites around country and town:
Mantra? Get it done. No excuses.
Best grooming tip? Use a men’s razor and men’s shaving cream to shave. They’re softer on the skin because they’re meant for men’s faces.
Guilty pleasure? Reality television. I watch nearly every show on Bravo and E!
Favorite foods? My dad and I are obsessed with Portillo’s chocolate cake but the best thing I’ve ever eaten was this past New Year’s. We rented a house in Florence, Italy and had an Italian chef cook dinner. She made the most delicious lasagna I’ve ever had. That night I woke up in the middle of a dream about it and went into the kitchen and had a slice of leftovers in the middle of the night. It was that good.
Music you love? I am big into music but I love podcasts. Right now, I’m into “Man in the Window” which is a docuseries from the L.A. Times about a serial killer from the ‘80s.
Best advice ever given to you? Learn to negotiate.
Best advice you’ve given? Women tend to not ask for what they want professionally; we undervalue ourselves professionally. If you put in the work, don’t be afraid to ask for what you want and don’t apologize for it.
Earliest memory? It’s an embarrassing one. When I was young, living with my mom and grandmother in southern Indiana, I was swinging on the swing set with some friends who were all flipping off the swing upside down. I tried to do it and my pants got caught on the swing so when I tried to flip off, my pants came down to my ankles and the swing dragged me through the wood chips. It was not a cute look.
When you wake up, you? Depends on if I’m showering that day. But for the most part, the first thing I do is look at my email, brush my teeth and walk the dog.
Before bed, you? Watch the news in bed with my hubby while he shops for cars and I shop for everything else.
What’s on your bookshelf? All the Light We Cannot See but I generally like thriller and murder mystery books
You can’t live without? My cell phone, my dog and my husband. Probably in that order.
Love to escape to? South Haven, Michigan. My family has had a home in South Haven since I was little and it is my happy place. The properties have changed through the years and now our family runs a glamping business (The Fields of Michigan) up there so I try and go as often as I can.
WHEN IN THE COUNTRY
Your style is? Laid back jeans and a t-shirt…although, if I’m working from home you’d be hard pressed to find me in anything other than yoga pants and a sweatshirt.
Can’t leave the house without? My cell phone, sunglasses, and ChapStick.
Transportation? Always an SUV. Right now, I’m driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee but my husband has an obsession with cars so I would imagine a new SUV is in my future.
Driving music? Usually I use the time in the car to catch up on missed Marco Polos from my girlfriends. I’m usually behind on the conversation so I let the videos play while I drive so I can get caught up on my girl talk!
Place to eat? We love Beatrix in Oak Brook. Fullers is always a go-to and any Mexican food is my jam.
Shop? I’m a Maxxinista! Love TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, Home Goods, and DSW. Those cover most all my obsessions.
Best thing about country? The people. Backyard barbecues with friends are the best.
Worst thing about country? Parking; there’s never a spot.
The perfect day is? I’ve recently gotten into Shred415 so love starting my day with a 5 a.m. workout class there, working from home that day and then meeting up with girlfriends and sitting in the backyard with drinks and girl talk in the evening.
WHEN IN TOWN
Your style is? I’m a big fan of a pencil skirt. It’s just enough dressy but can also be casual. You can usually find me in a pencil skirt and pumps.
Transportation? If I’m not walking, which I try and do most everywhere downtown, I’m in an Uber.
Driving music? I’m usually listening to podcasts or listening to 101.9, The Mix for my morning walk to the office.
Place to eat? Gejas is my absolute favorite restaurant in the world. We go for my birthday every year and I look forward to it all year long.
Shop? For the most part when I’m downtown, I’m at work so I’m not doing much shopping.
Best thing about town? All the restaurants and walking everywhere.
Worst thing about town? The congestion.
The perfect day is? A great day at work and then sitting on a rooftop (I love Cindy’s at the Chicago Athletic Association) with a glass of champagne.
