Known to everyone as Junior, DANNY QUALTIER JR. is the owner of Prime “N” Tender Meats (primeandtendermeats.com) in Hinsdale. The “mom and pop” business was established in 1985 by his father, Dan Sr. and wife Joyce, with a mission to bring quality meat products and personal service to customers. Junior worked side-by-side with his father, learning the business and establishing a talent all his own as a gifted butcher, and business and people person. His wife Jackie works alongside Junior, handling events coordination and farmers markets. Daughter Abigail helps out too. In addition to its offerings of the highest quality prime grade meats, poultry, homemade Italian sausages (featured on Chicago’s Best), and cheeses, PNT offers deli meats, grab-and-go homemade meals, soups, made-to-order deli sandwiches, and a hot lunch menu for eat in or carry out. PNT also gives back to the community, donating all the concession food to the Hinsdale Central Boys Baseball Team and the Hinsdale Dare Program, as well as food and gift certificates to several of the local Boy Scout troops. Here are a few of Junior’s lasts:
Last epic cookout that you will never forget?
The annual Dean Halloween Party in October, for one of our longtime customers, is always unforgettable with plenty of burgers, sausages, brats, and cheese fries along with a full haunted house, complete with goblins, in the yard.
Last fabulous culinary discovery in our area?
The opening of North American Pizza and Culinary Academy in Lisle. This amazing new cooking school features classes as simple as a date night for pizza and Prosecco to more elaborate classes focused on risotto and lamb shanks. It’s also only the second location in the world accredited to provide a five-day pizzaiolo certification.
Last vacation that left you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated?
This past January was the first time in seven years that I went on a family vacation with my wife and daughter. Seven full days in the Jamaican sun along with a private cabana was just what we all needed to regroup and recharge.
Last food discovery that surprised you?
I visited San Francisco last year and discovered Burmese food for the first time. While you can taste the Indian and Thai influence it has a flavor all its own. The dishes were filled with bold flavors that were refreshing, spicy, earthy, and unlike anything I had tasted before.
Last feedback from customer that indicates why you’re so successful?
The one that sticks out as most memorable and heartwarming is from Stephanie Bieniek. She started by saying how the quality of our foods was outstanding but what she admired most was that our staff excels in customer service, and that we are the nicest, friendliest people you can ever meet and she feels like she is always treated as part of the family.
Last great piece of life advice that you often share with others?
Life advice that I only recently put into action, and it’s changed my life: You only get one life so don’t get so wound up with life’s stressors that you forget to live. If the problem at hand isn’t going to make a difference next week, next month, or next year … let it go.
