Who would have thought that youngsters eating a cold treat would lead to what Dr. Nesreen Suwan considers today to be a “revolution in cosmetic procedures?”
In 2005, scientists from Harvard observed that when young children repeatedly ate popsicles they eventually developed dimples. Because fat cells respond to cold differently than other tissues such as skin, dimples developed as a result of repeated exposure to cold causing the tissue to shrink.
Today, the same concept is available through CoolSculpting—a a medical procedure that literally freezes away unwanted fat in areas such as the neck, thighs, stomach, waist, and back.
“It’s the coolest thing,” says Dr. Suwan, a primary physician at Forever 25 Medical Center in Lisle. “It’s space age technology, and it’s changing the face of cosmetic medicine.”
The procedure is simple. First, patients are assessed by Dr. Suwan herself. “This is a very important part of the process,” she says. “I do the procedure myself so I have to make sure the candidates are the right fit.”
Next, the cooling process freezes fat cells which eventually burst and are eliminated from the body naturally. Over a period of one to two months, the patient sees a shrinkage in the targeted area.
“The results are more gradual, but unlike liposuction, the beauty of CoolSculpting is that you can keep doing it,” says Dr. Suwan. This “lunchtime procedure” is vastly different from liposuction. Gone are the days of anesthetic procedures, days to weeks of downtime, and limited results. Plus, it’s a lot safer than going under the knife. CoolSculpting is noninvasive and does not involve any incisions or injections, yet the same results are achieved.
“It’s the most amazing procedure,” says Dr. Suwan. “It’s wonderful to help patients feel great about themselves when all else fails.”
