DuPage Medical Group is growing and thriving here in Hinsdale. Chief Operating Officer Dennis Fine gives Hinsdale Living some insight into why so many people are choosing DMG.
Hinsdale Living: Choosing a physician can be a daunting task. What should patients look for?
Dennis Fine: In seeking a new physician, patients need to think about several things—qualifications, locations, and the ability to communicate with you and other physicians. Seek a physician who has solid credentials, attended a good medical school, and had experience at a leading institution in residency. If a patient has a specific condition, illness, or concern, they should also consider seeking a physician who has additional training or interest in those conditions. When thinking about location, it’s important to remember that nobody wakes up and decides they want to go to the doctor that day. So, should they wake up and need to see their physician, a physician with locations near home or work can be critical. Lastly, communication is key—both with you as a patient and a doctor’s ability to communicate with other physicians. At DuPage Medical Group, our electronic medical record has not only kept patients’ information and health histories up-to-date and available for whichever DMG physician they choose to see, but has also allowed our physicians to connect with other DMG physicians. With real-time updates, physicians are able to see other doctors’ most recent notes and dictations on patients, enabling a more advanced level of collaboration and communication. For patient communication, I think a personal connection always helps. I look for a physician who might have similar personal interests to my own or be in a similar situation. For example, I enjoy running and being active; I chose my physician because I read that he has similar interests and is about the same age as I am.
How can working with an integrated medical group help patients be proactive about their health?
This is one characteristic of our group which we believe sets us apart. Our group is a large, multi-specialty group with more than 400 physicians across four counties using the same electronic medical record system for documenting patient encounters, placing lab and radiology orders, and making referrals to specialists. With this streamlined technology, specialists can quickly see the entire health histories of their patients and, therefore, increase the efficiency of their visits. They also have the ability to communicate instantly with each other and discuss someone’s care.
You have so many specialties in your three Hinsdale locations. Do patients really appreciate the convenience?
We believe that patients do enjoy the convenience. It’s great to be able to see a physician and then go to a specialist in the same building or nearby, so we have tried to make appointments as convenient as possible for our patients. We are excited about the opening of the new building on Clay, as it will bring some additional services to Hinsdale that we haven’t been able to offer our patients locally before, including radiology tests, digital mammography, CT, DEXA, and ultrasound. We recently added otolaryngology (ENT), GI, and urology practices to Hinsdale, as well.
With many specialists in the different locations, communication in the offices must be streamlined. Do your physicians appreciate the collaborative environment?
Our physicians truly believe in doing what is best for the patient, and collaboration fosters that idea. In one of our Hinsdale offices, for example, we’ve had other specialists come in and begin office hours so that it’s easier for their patients, and, so far, it has been working really well. Our group is independent and physician-owned, and the physicians take great pride in that fact. For patients, this means that they are always kept in mind because the physicians make the clinical decisions. While we have an executive leadership team that I am part of, we work hand in hand with the Board of Directors to carry out their objectives for the group. As a group, our physicians get together frequently to talk through ideas and decisions that will help us improve the delivery of patient care in the communities we serve.
DuPage Medical now has three locations in Hinsdale. You must have a lot of satisfied patients who feel comfortable referring friends and neighbors to you. Tell us a bit about your growth.
We are happy to be able to provide great care to so many patients and appreciate the referrals that our current patients provide to their friends and neighbors. It is because of our strong patient population that we continue to add new physicians and services. In the last two years, we’ve added additional sub-specialists in endocrinology, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology (we just added two maternal fetal medicine physicians), radiation oncology, and surgical oncology. We want to be able to provide the best possible care for our patients at locations that are convenient for them. Physicians from top medical schools and residency programs are interested in joining our group because of our expansive reach and our philosophy of care. We strive to adapt to what health care demands and will undoubtedly continue to adapt in the future, meeting the needs of all of our patients—from the simplest to the most complex.
