A universal truth about people is that they want to be heard. The feeling one gets when someone sincerely listens to their needs, their wants, and, yes, even their little quirks is almost unsurpassed in life. Susan Klimala, co-owner of the Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn, not only listens to her clients on this rarefied level, but she takes what she learns and uses the information to create dream kitchens with the kinds of surprising details that make daily activities a delight. “We ask questions about how people live. We find out who cooks in the family and where the groceries go when you arrive home from the store. Listening to the answers—from both men and women— helps us create something unique on every project,” Susan says.
The Kitchen Studio offers a full-service approach to remodeling, handling all of the design and installation internally, which streamlines the process for homeowners and brings a personal touch to every step of the progression. “People come to us because they want to make things simple. They’re not looking to apply for permits, negotiate with contractors, and make multiple visits to the flooring and tile stores. They want us to do it all—and we do,” says Susan.
What they do is design kitchens from traditional to transitional, and Susan shares that some clients are even starting to flirt with the idea of more contemporary designs.
The kitchen shown here is part of a ranch-style house with a swimming pool set on a large parcel of land. The couple who call it home have a preschool-age daughter and enjoy hosting friends and family for swim parties and other gatherings. The cramped nature of the original kitchen did not lend itself
A bedroom was incorporated into the space, opening the area up significantly and offering easier access to the outside. They wanted an area that could be used as a self-contained bar with access to snacks and drinks. The Kitchen Studio created a bar area with an undercounter refrigerator, wine cooler, and other at-your-fingertips necessities. Now people can come inside from sunning or swimming and perch at the bar with a beverage of their choice.
Other custom-crafted touches are the island, which is 39 inches rather than the standard 36 inches. Both the husband and wife are tall, and the additional inches combined with a cleverly concealed pop-up mixer give her a primary workspace that is ideal for daily cooking. He has his own beverage area to properly brew the coffee that is dear to his Austrian heart.
These details add to the beauty of the space, with its elegant white marble and sleek light fixtures, and while some of the choices are the results of the very good listening skills of the Kitchen Studio, they are also the elements that dazzle visitors and tend to inspire others to dream of remodeling their own kitchen. Sometimes, even the basics have the ability to delight those who’ve been coping with an outdated kitchen. “People can get really excited about the recycling bin being in the right spot,” says Susan. Working with a certified kitchen designer like Susan and the staff at the Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn can get you to that happy place.
“We’re down-to-earth and used to working with all budgets,” says Susan, who has worked on hundreds of jobs in her 12 years of designing and seven years of co-owning the studio. This team loves what they do—creating kitchens that bring a little joy to everyday living.
