When asked about the stylish group in this 1960 photograph, Melissa Waters doesn’t hesitate to provide details. “The man in the middle is Harry Dubofsky. He was the grandfather of the current owner, Susie Duboe-Bryant. She’s the third-generation owner of Hinsdale Furriers, and I’m the fourth generation family member to be a part of the store.” Melissa is Susie’s niece.
The photograph was taken at a fashion show at Hinsdale Golf Club.
The ladies, all wives of members, modeled the elegant furs along with jewelry from Retzel Jewelry, which was located on Hinsdale Avenue at the time.
Susie reports that residents and people visiting the area often stop in the store to view the photo and marvel at a beloved grandmother or great-aunt in full fashionable regalia of the era.
Family-owned businesses like Hinsdale Furriers become a part of their customers’ lives, bringing a personal touch to social events and integrating into the charitable good works of the community.
Some of the super-chic, now retro furs pictured on the elegant ladies of Hinsdale Golf Club may have even come back into the boutique where Susie and her team streamline them into modern incarnations that feel right for the more casual, but no less glamorous, lifestyle of today. Susie and her team blend modern fashion ideas with old-world workmanship in their atelier through the This Old Fur corner of the store.
Just like Harry before them, Susie and Melissa pride themselves on knowing what their customers want, they support worthy organizations, and their furs appear in the most festive and influential fashion shows around. You might even say, what’s old is new again.
