We couldn’t wait to get our hands on beauty guru Bobbi Brown’s latest book, Pretty Powerful. With the holidays quickly approaching, we know better than anyone that learning a few new makeup tips is vitally important to our winter party beauty regime. If you haven’t read her new book yet, make sure you add it to your shopping list (actually, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to buy two or three, as they make great gifts for sisters, daughters, mothers, and friends). Sheridan Road recently caught up with Bobbi, a New Trier graduate, to learn more about the life-changing stories of the real women who inspired her book.
How did you choose the celebrity and non-celeb subjects for your new book “Pretty Powerful”?
All of the women in the book have inspired me in their own special way. They come from all different backgrounds, are uniquely beautiful, and have motivating life stories that are truly empowering.
For example, author and motivational speaker, Liz Murray’s power to transform her life is amazing. When I read Liz’s book Breaking Night I couldn’t put it down – I was so moved by her story of growing up with drug-addicted parents, surviving homelessness and making it to Harvard. Despite the tough experiences Liz was handed in life, she rose above it all and has made an incredible life for herself empowering other women.
Triathlete Laurel Wassner is incredibly inspiring – her positive attitude and determination fueled her win over cancer. After battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma at 23 years old, Laurel didn’t let her illness defeat her – she drew strength from it. Now the petite powerhouse is healthy and competing in triathlons with her twin sister, Rebeccah.
Actress Gabourey Sidibe is a shining example of a confident woman. What I love most about her is that she is comfortable in her own skin. Being an actor in Hollywood isn’t easy and you’re subjected to all types of criticisms and pressures. But Gabourey overcame industry misconceptions because she knows who she is and is happy to be herself.
As the author of a few beauty and make up guides, what prompted you to pen this one?
Over the years I’ve worked with countless women who have inspired me with their stories. Beyond makeup, we’ve talked about life-altering events; everything from the joy of being a new mom to dealing with homelessness and divorce. With each conversation, these women have shown that when you have the will and the heart, almost anything is possible—and that’s what the idea of Pretty Powerful is all about.
So with this book, I wanted to share some truly motivating stories, plus amazing transformations from real women, celebrities, and athletes. I hope they will inspire others as much as they have inspired me.
Describe your experience working on this book. Was it different from your early ones?
Pretty Powerful is different from the rest of my books because it’s a new kind of makeup guide that starts with who you are, rather than how you look. The book is about conversations and transformations with more than 70 incredible women. It also includes my top makeup tips and tricks and personal stories to help women be their best, most authentic selves. Writing Pretty Powerful was an unforgettable experience. I had the honor of working with an amazing group of women who are full of energy and confidence, and whose celebration of life is truly inspiring. Spending time with these women–everyone from the real women to celebrities and athletes–I realized that we all have our own issues, things that challenge us, and days when we don’t always feel our best.
What is the one thing that you would like readers to take away after reading Pretty Powerful?
My hope is to help women everywhere understand that being who you are is the secret to lasting beauty–and that all of us can be both pretty and Pretty Powerful.
Pretty Powerful is available for $29.95 at Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Nordstrom.
