Lake Forest’s Sarah Somers was ready to shake things up. After 15 years in the financial world, she longed to do something more creative. Last year, leveraging her experience from working with startups, Somers launched DESEDA, a line of luxe silk scarves (“deseda” means “of silk” in Spanish). Each hand-finished square is printed in Italy and designed in collaboration with artists from around the world. “I love the idea of being able to come up with a timeless piece that I can bring directly to the consumer,” says Somers. “I also really like working with artists from all over the globe to tell beautiful stories.” For the second time, Somers will host a pop-up shop for Deseda in Lake Forest’s Market Square—this time from now through December 22. “I’m so excited to be sharing Deseda with the community this holiday,” Somers adds.
DESEDA is located at 270 Market Square in Lake Forest, shopdeseda.com.
When two Lake Forest moms came up with the idea to start a club aimed to foster a love of reading among their children and friends, they never imagined the possibilities it would lead to. As an English and reading teacher for more than 15 years, Lauren Fairchild had seen too many kids dislike reading by the time they reach their teens. To try to put the fun back into reading, she and childhood friend Cece Gottman (both attended Lake Forest Country Day School and Lake Forest High School) created the local book club that would become the foundation of Lit League activity boxes. Designed to be convenient for caregivers and fun for kids, each Lit League box includes a carefully chosen book (picture or chapter), a vocabulary bookmark, four to five activities, discussion questions and answers, and all the necessary tools to enjoy a shared family experience or to participate in a book club with friends. With monthly subscription rates at $32.99 (with free shipping) Lit League boxes make the perfect holiday gift for the little readers in your life. For more information, visit litleagueboxes.com.
Five friendly basketball rivals, including Michael Jordan, discovered their shared love for tequila over a dinner one night and decided to start a company inspired by their passion to create the finest tasting tequila. After several years of research, blending, tasting, and development, with a singular goal to create the new gold standard in tequila, Cincoro Tequila was released—rich and delicious with a smooth and luxurious finish. The signature Cincoro taste profile is derived from a unique process created to highlight the highest quality 100 percent Blue Weber agave. The agave is hand-selected, slow-cooked, and distilled in small batches, creating two distinct distillates, which are then mixed together to create an innovative new blend. The result is a one-of-a-kind tequila experience akin to a cognac or fine wine, making for the perfect holiday gift for any wine or spirits lover. Available at Binny’s Beverage Depot, 153 Skokie Valley Highway, Highland Park; or to have it delivered to your door, visit cincoro.com.

Just in time for the men on your holiday shopping list, Smith’s Men’s Store is reopening with Lake Forest’s Trey Gonzales and Kip Helverson at the helm. Entrepreneurs at heart, Gonzales and Helverson were intrigued when they heard that this historic local business, opened originally in Market Square in 1937, was for sale. While the store has had a major interior renovation, it will still feel familiar to returning customers. “Kip and I moved to Lake Forest because we love Lake Forest,” says Gonzales, who will be the face of Smith’s and manage it day-to-day. “We didn’t come here to shake things up.” While Gonzales and Helverson will inject their own personalities into the new retail offerings, local favorites like Peter Millar, Vineyard Vines, Barbour, Southern Tide, and johnnie-O will continue to be available. “We’ll display photos and memorabilia of Smith’s Men’s Store history as part of the store’s décor. It’s important to us to honor the families who have been part of the Smith’s story for the past 82 years,” Gonzales says. Smith’s Men’s Store is located at 770 N. Western Avenue in Lake Forest,847-234-5866.
