The winner was a Gothic revival design by New York architects John Mead Howells and Raymond M. Hood, utilizing Indiana limestone, Art Deco details, and embedding stones from historic monuments and battlefields—including Bunker Hill, Omaha Beach, Westminster Abbey, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Kremlin. Even the building’s iconic “crown” paid homage to the 13th century Rouen Cathedral in France.
