One of the bedrocks of life in Lake Forest are the roots that bind our community—resilient roots that trace to families who have called this city home for generations. And when these families come together for a common cause, magic can happen.
That charm will soon be evident during the 2nd Annual Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show, which will take place at the historic Merchandise Mart from May 18 to 20. Co-chaired by Lake Forest residents Jenny McKinney and Elissa Kovas, the May 17 opening night preview party event will serve as the Spring fundraiser for The Woman’s Board of Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
“I joined the Woman’s Board in 2013 and when the opportunity came up to partner with the Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show, I volunteered to help with the party,” explains McKinney. “After that decision, my first two calls were (co-chair) Meredith (Wood Prince) and Elissa. Meredith, Elissa and I are all great friends and Meredith’s family has a long history with The Women’s Board of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The work in planning the party and fundraising is so much more fun when you get to do it with people you adore!”
Indeed, this Lake Forest connection is sure to shine throughout the event, which will attract more than 80 premiere dealers from all over the world, including co-Design Chair and Los Angeles-based designer Ruthie Sommers.
“Meredith and Elissa have both worked on multiple projects with Ruthie so she was a natural fit,” McKinney explains. “Meredith and Ruthie married best friends and spend their summers together in Newport, Rhode Island. We knew having her on board would add such an exciting element to the party. Ruthie then introduced us to Manhattan-based interior designer (and co-Design Chair) Nick Olsen who is also doing a project in Lake Forest. Lucky for us, they both loved the idea of partnering with The Woman’s Board.”
Kovas, a long-time devotee to the world of fine art and design, says her family is currently working on their fourth project with Sommers.
“So at this point, we feel like Ruthie is part of our family,” she says. “We have a lot of fun working on our projects together.”
Showcasing everything from 17th century antiques to Modernism furniture by notable exhibitors such as Trinity House Paintings and Martine Boston Antiques, the Chicago Antiques + Art+ Design Show and opening night benefit is sure to be a gala affair for Lake Forest and Lake Bluff supporters.
“Ruthie and Nick are helping us to shape the look and feel of the preview party,” says Kovas, explaining that the event will span 50,000 square feet on the Merchandise Mart’s 7th floor. “Ruthie will be decorating the party space, mixing some amazing antiques that will be for sale with some more modern pieces. They will also be designating their favorite pieces in the show with a ‘Ruthie & Nick’s picks’ ribbon. Then on Friday, May 18, they will be back to present as the keynote speakers in the show’s lecture series. Your ticket to the preview night includes access to the show throughout the weekend and the Friday lecture series.”
