If you have yet to see this year’s winning design for the fifth annual Ragdale Ring competition, plan a visit to the historic Howard Van Doren Shaw estate and nonprofit artists retreat on Thursday evening, July 13, as Silk Road Quartet steps into the ring. Curated by Jamil Khoury and Malik Gillani of Silk Road Rising, this musical journey along Silk Road is told through story and song with multi-instrumentalist Ronnie Malley, flutist Jennie Oh-Brown, and musicians Carlo Basile and Bob Garrett.
The winner of the 2017 Ragdale Ring competition is LIVING PICTURE, a work that recreates Shaw’s 1912 garden stage design as digital imagery on objects placed around the grounds. A young, internationally recognized architectural collaborative called T+E+A+M was awarded the Adrian Smith Prize for the piece, which includes a $15,000 production grant and a 10-person, design-build residency for up to three weeks at Ragdale.
