Kelcey Roberts and her husband began traveling to Wellington, Florida 35 years ago to play polo. After raising their family in Barrington Hills, Kelcey and her husband RJ resumed their winter Wellington escapes four years ago to enjoy horse events in the area. “I ride dressage and started playing polo again,” she says, explaining that there are many fellow Barringtonians who flock to the area in winter to enjoy polo, dressage, and hunter/jumper horse sports. “Our two sons are grown and live in Barrington and Arlington Heights.” When not in Florida, Kelcey and RJ enjoy life on their farm, filled with horses, donkeys, and chickens. Lily, a Maltese, is a very special (award winning) member of their family as well. When Kelcey is not riding or competing, she is an active member of the Garden Club of Barrington and serves on the Equestrian Committee for Barrington Hills. Here are a few of her favorite lasts:
Last unexpected encounter you had with a fellow Barringtonian and horse enthusiast in Florida?
It wasn’t unexpected but my friend Michelle was in town to enjoy the sunshine and see what Wellington had to offer for horse and rider attire. The country’s top professional and amateur riders compete here for top prize money in the jumpers and the top riders and dressage horses compete in International Dressage competitions to get their scores to try to get on a team (Pan Am games, for example).
Last travel discovery that you love to share with others?
The last travel destination I went to was Little Palm Island off the Florida Keys. It was very private, beautiful, and relaxing.
Last memorable horse show that you were a part of?
I was not part of this show but enjoyed watching it. Last weekend there was a draft horse show here with a unicorn class (3 horse carriage) and an 8-in-hand carriage driving class. Magnificent huge draft horses all in their polished and shiny harnesses pulling their beautiful show wagons was really a sight to see! Also, the Friday Night Dressage Freestyle class (dressage to music) is always enjoyable. You watch the top horse and riders compete Where can you ride dressage, play polo, watch a draft horse show, then enjoy high goal polo all in the same day? Only in Wellington. It truly is “Horse Heaven.”
Last moment that made you realize why you travel to Florida every winter?
Sunshine, palm trees, and horses, horses, horses! Plus, there’s no snow and ice here.
Last amazing meal, in Barrington or Wellington (or another town down there)?
There are so many great restaurants here that it is hard to pick one. The seafood bar at The Breakers at Palm Beach on the ocean is always good. In Wellington, I like Oli’s and a new restaurant called Kaluz.
