It’s hard not to be captivated by the charm of life in the French countryside. So, when a local couple searched for a Barrington Hills property to build their second home in the early 1980s, they drew inspiration from the elegant architecture they had seen on their travels through Europe.
“The dream was country French with stone walls, interesting rooms, a warm and comfortable feeling, a cool indoor pool, and beautiful grounds with the potential for water features that were wildlife friendly,” the wife explains.
Architect John Marshall & Associates did not disappoint.
The result exceeded the Jorgensens’ own high hopes and expectations. With four bedrooms and six bathrooms, this more than 10,000 square foot home—currently offered at $1,950,000—could easily be mistaken for one nestled in the hills of Provence. Located at 128 W. County Line Road, the rustic,10-acre property has two lakes and an abundance of wildlife.
“We love sitting on one of the blue stone patios waiting for the wildlife to happen by,” the wife says. “There are many species of birds, including families of geese and a Heron that tries to feast off the beautiful koi in the pond. Sometimes we are lucky enough to see twin fawns drink from the pond in early spring.”
In tune with French architecture, the three-story stone house is both rustic and refined, with walnut floors and barn-style vaulted ceilings. There is even a tall limestone fireplace in the living room that was custom-designed in France and shipped over. The house also evokes a castle-like element with a stone-covered turret that was made into a loft foyer.
Rightfully so, the property is named Stonebridge.
“We have two low bridges made of stone that cross a small pond and creek,” the wife explains. “While we sit on the patio off the living room, we can sip a glass of wine, either just the two of us or with friends, and listen to the waterfall trickle to the lower level to find the whirlpool and entrance to the indoor pool.”
Nothing is more tranquil than the sound of water flowing in a grand stone fountain. “The fountains and waterfalls bring a wonderful feeling of serenity,” says the husband. “After a day of work or a busy schedule, it makes you unwind. The grounds are like having your own arboretum and you don’t have to go anywhere to enjoy it.”
Rosborough Partners Landscaping did an excellent job in making it look very natural, as the couple envisioned.
While they take pleasure in every space in the home, the kitchen gets the most use. The house was built for entertaining, and the couple has enjoyed hosting many friends and business associates over the years.
“We enjoy trying new recipes and having our guests help with the cooking,” the wife adds. “The house has a great flow for entertaining inside and out. From pool parties to formal dinners, the house makes everyone feel comfortable. The guys seem to end up in the lower level at the antique pub bar, which we found at an antique shop in Atlanta.”
Another fascinating element of Stonebridge is the cottage. The upstairs started out as a storage area and was then turned into an art studio where the wife could design jewelry. Later, it became a living area for their nephew and his family for a short time.
The lower level of the cottage features a unique five-car garage and machine shop. “It’s a handyman’s Utopia, featuring a high-end audio system for daily enjoyment or for a buddy day with refreshments and music,” adds the husband. “The raised ceilings would also be opportune for indoor sports, such as basketball or golf.”
This charismatic home has the warmth of an old French country cottage, and the homeowners have taken pleasure in calling it theirs for 30 years.
“Stonebridge needs a family who will enjoy all it offers. It’s great for a couple that is looking for that getaway but doesn’t have to leave home to find it,” the wife says. “The front gates open and close behind you and you are in a beautiful place.”
