Avid local environmentalists Hank and Wendy Paulson were among an esteemed list of presenters at a sold-out “Town Warming” event February 3 at Barrington’s White House. The Paulsons presented their take on a classic “fireside chat,” discussing the impact of climate change on our planet as well as the local economy. Through the Paulson Institute, Hank and Wendy have been working diligently to bring resources and awareness to climate issues around the world, particularly in China and Latin America. Village President Karen Darch, who spent months assembling the event with the Barrington Cultural Commission, said she was thrilled with the outcome. “Our goal was to ‘warm up’ our community by providing a chance to gather together as our forefathers did during the Depression era to learn from some of our area’s and our nation’s most influential leaders. We are so pleased with the success of this first modern-day Town Warming, and we hope to continue it in future years.” Congrats to all who were involved.

TO THE CASTLE
Green beer? Corned beef and cabbage? Always fun to enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day in America but truth be told, not very Irish at all. For a real taste of Irish history and culture, check out Tarquin Blake’s new book, Exploring Ireland’s Castles. This coffee table-worthy tome takes you on a tour of lesser-known gems, such as Fiddaun Castle in County Galway, as well a luxury hotels like Ashford Castle in County Mayo. Photos are accompanied with historic stories of the families who lived through triumph and tragedy behind these fortified walls. Available on amazon.com or at your favorite local bookstore.
