Over the past several years, we have seen a growing number of patients who are seeking replacements to their metal fillings and bondings. Metal-free fillings are certainly more aesthetically attractive and are more widely used this day and age. However, what many patients don’t realize is that there are several health advantages to using metal-free materials as well.
The dental industry agrees that amalgam fillings (also known as silver or metal fillings) contain 50 percent mercury. Amalgam fillings expand and contract with the changing temperature of one’s mouth (cold/hot/drinks/foods). This movement weakens the tooth wall, which fractures the tooth and allows bacteria to enter, leading to dental decay and disease.
Additionally, some dental resin materials like composite fillings and bondings contain Bishphenol A, better known as BPA, a controversial material found in plastics, which has also been linked to health illnesses. Studies have found that the oral enzymes in our saliva can release BPA from resin dental materials.
At Tobias Family Dentistry, we are always looking for the safest alternatives for our patients, and therefore, we not only use metal-free alternatives, but BPA-free materials as well. BPA-free composites are the best materials for treating cavities—there are no harmful chemicals and they actually bond to the tooth. They are more stable, provide a tighter seal, are more resistant to fracturing, and provide a more aesthetically pleasing tooth appearance.
If you are considering removing metal fillings, or if you are getting a new cavity filled, be sure to ask your dentist if he/she uses BPA-free composites. Your smile and your health will thank you.
