Sitting in a linen upholstered chair in a gleaming-white kitchen, watching the rain fall through the wide framed French doors that have been flung open to let the spring breezes indoors makes one think that whomever built this house knew exactly what they were doing.
No surprise that this home in the Village of Barrington came to life under the mindful watch of Don and Craig Ciaglia, the father-and-son team of Homes by Pinnacle—a company that Don, a civil engineer by background, founded with more than 40 years of experience building custom homes.
While it was never part of Don’s master plan to have his son join him in the custom home building business, he did want them to get a taste for what it was like.
“When we were in high school, my dad would buy a lot and my older brother and I would build the house over the summer,” Craig remembers. “When the house sold, we’d divide the profits that helped pay for college. We would do most of the work—really everything but the electrical, heating, and plumbing. We did this four or five times and it was a great learning experience.”
In the late ‘90s after graduating from college with a degree in economics, Craig joined his father in the custom home building business. “Every home we build is different from the one before. There’s no particular style we focus on. I think that’s what makes us different,” Don says. “We truly focus on the custom home idea. There’s no box you have to fit in for us to work with you.
We take pride in designing different styles of homes. That’s really the challenging aspect of custom home building. No two days, no two projects are the same.”
With more than two decades working side by side, Craig credits the strong partnership to what both he and his dad bring to the table. “You always hear the horror stories about when family members work together, but this works very well,” Craig says. “We don’t agree on everything, but for the most part, our relationship is easy. With me being a little younger, I have a different perspective on some things, but my dad’s experience is priceless. So that combination—when you mesh—is powerful.”
The client base for Homes by Pinnacle tends to be in the northwest suburbs, concentrating mostly in the Barringtons.
“When my wife and I moved to the Village, we did so because we wanted a community that would be a great place to raise a family,” Craig says. “Barrington checks off a lot of those boxes. It’s a very warm, charming community that appeals to many people.”
Building homes in and around the community in which they live gives the Ciaglias a great deal of expertise on where the market is and what works best.
“We have some clients come to us who know exactly what kind of house they would like us to build,” explains Don. “But we have others who only know the size of the home they want. We have actually sat down and done bubble drawings with the kitchen here and a family room there—just to create a starting point.”
Don and Craig take great pride in how they manage the process from when the home is just an idea to its completion.
“Building a home can be a terribly overwhelming process,” Craig says. “We do our best from the beginning to make sure there are no surprises, educating the homeowner every step of the way. We design a house that will work for the homeowner’s lifestyle, what they’re trying to accomplish, and what their budget is. There is nothing worse than spending a month or two designing a dream home that the client can’t afford. That’s why we always have a sharp eye on the budget.”
With sights set for the future, the Ciaglias forecast many more homes with the Homes by Pinnacle signature sign out front.
“I come to work everyday not really knowing what unforeseen challenges will occur,” says Don with a laugh. “But that makes this profession exciting—maybe not for everyone, but certainly for me. That’s what keeps me coming to work everyday.”
