After 40 years in the jewelry business , Brad Gamss, owner and president of Rahl Jewelers, knows a thing or two about fine jewelry.
“Something we do really well at Rahl is finding jewelry pieces that you can’t find anywhere else,” he says. “There are some consumers who are drawn to the ads that they hear on the radio for jewelry stores at the mall, but you’ll never find the unique pieces that we have here everyday.”
Brad Gamss began in the jewelry business in 1972, picking up deliveries for a jeweler in Chicago. It wasn’t long before he was promoted to the sales floor, then to store manager, and then offered the chance to purchase one of the business’s locations.
Originally located in Hanover Park, Gamss made the decision to move the store he bought to the South Barrington area in 2007.
“We treat all of our customers the same—whether they’re replacing a watch battery or ready to spend thousands of dollars on a piece. They are both our clients and our friends.”
Rahl Jewelers offers a wide array of jewelry, from engagement and bridal sets to colored stone jewelry, gold and silver jewelry, and designer lines by Simon G., Le Vian, Frederic Sage, Peter Storm, and Supreme. Watch selections for both men and women include Bulova, Movado, Seiko, and TW Steel, and the store also carries an impressive selection of Lladró figurines. “We truly have something for everyone’s budget,” he says, “for young women looking for $50 bridesmaid gifts, to something much more substantial.”
Located in the Fountain Crossing Plaza, Rahl Jewelers has also become well known throughout the area for their custom design capabilities using designer Anthony Carone. Carone’s office is a testament to his work—with photos of his finished designs lining his wall like a jewelry-themed mosaic.
“I sit with customers to design a piece from scratch while the customer is watching,” explains Carone, who offers custom design appointments throughout the week. “It’s not a matter of opening a catalog and picking out something you like. Instead, you can bring in a ring and we can take it apart and put it into a new setting,” he says. “I first make it in clay, and then wax, so you have a feel for what the piece will be like when it’s finished. When we’re finished, you have something that you will wear and something that is truly your style. There aren’t many jewelry stores where you can get something so custom—the process is very collaborative. Our clients truly feel a part of the process.”
Gamss’s son Ryan joined the business in 2012, recently graduating with his Graduate Diamonds degree from the Gemological Institute of America. Newly married, Ryan is a true asset to young couples buying their first important piece of jewelry with their purchase of engagement and wedding rings.
And after all these years, Gamss says he still understands what it takes to keep a successful business going. “Repeat customer and customer referrals are still the life blood of this business,” says Gamss. “Our clients truly become like family and it’s our goal to always make them feel that way.”
