CIRCLING THE BASES
It was not quite a masterpiece.
But … close enough.
Henry Haracz turned in an ace-like performance in helping Loyola Academy to a 4-1 victory over host Notre Dame in a Class 4A regional title game in Niles on May 26.
The senior right-hander used a mix of pitches — fastball, slider and change-up — to mowed down hitters. He kept the Dons off the scoreboard for the first five innings.
“That’s exactly what we needed from him,” said LA head coach Nick Bridich. “He gave us some phenomenal senior leadership.”
Having great command allowed Haracz to take control of the game. He allowed only one run on six hits. He struck out four and walked only one batter.
Junior Jake Novak worked the seventh inning and picked up the save.
Senior catcher Jason Vrbancic certainly had a say in the game’s outcome.
“Jason called his own game tonight,” said Haracz. “I just trusted him. I didn’t shake him off. Not once.
“We were rolling,” the hurler added. “We kept them off balance.”
A pair of twin killings also worked in Haracz’s favor — especially that 1-2-3 double play with the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
“Usually, I’m pretty bad at fielding balls hit right back to me on the mound,” admitted Haracz. “But on that one, I took my time and got it to Jason. He caught it, stepped on home plate and then really whipped it to first base [to complete the double play].”
In the second inning, LA shortstop Jack Moran flashed the defense, when he fielded a ground ball up the middle, stepped on the second-base bag and gunned the ball to first to turn a double play.
“On the defensive side, you saw that we can make some plays,” said Bridich.
Facing a tough hurler in left-hander Paul Berstrom, LA’s offense was sparked by the bottom-five hitters in the batting order.
It all started with a three-run second inning, when the Ramblers (21-9-1) chained together five quality at-bats in a row.
Second baseman Matthew Raymond got it started, when he ripped a one-out double into right-center field. He then scored on a ground ball single up the middle by center fielder Will Jackson.
Daniel Hrvojevic kept the line moving with a sharp single to left field. The next hitter, Moran, went the other way with an RBI single. And then, the scoring concluded with an RBI ground ball by Johnny Mejia.
Jackson also trigged things in the fourth inning, when he smacked a one-double to the gap in right center. He later came around on a line-drive single by Hrvojevic.
“We’re a good offensive team — from one to nine,” said Haracz, who drew two walks from his No. 2 spot in the batting order.
Earlier in the day, Loyola Academy had its graduation ceremony. Haracz enjoyed the ceremony, but he did confess: “I was thinking about this baseball game the whole time.”
Haracz and Co. will now focus on the sectional tournament, which will be hosted by LA on May 30. The Ramblers will take on Maine West at 4:30 p.m. in the first semifinal game. Then, Lane Tech will face Evanston in the other semifinal.
Warren 4, Lake Forest 3
— This one was a heartbreaker for Lake Forest.
The Scouts, seeded No. 13 in the St. Viator Tournament, were one out away from upsetting No. 6 Warren in a Class 4A regional championship game at Glenbrook North on May 26.
Andrew Gough was all set to be the hero for the Scouts (19-14-1). The senior second baseman hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to give his team a 3-2 lead.
But Warren, which went 2-1 against LF during the regular season, rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, Jack Nitch and Bradley Vondruska hit doubles against LF ace closer Will Woidat.
Vodruska lined a 1-1 pitch over the head of LF right-fielder Drew Golde, who just missed making a running, over-the-shoulder, back-handed catch.
Then, in the eighth inning, the Blue Devils pushed across the winning run, when Riley Kocen hit a one-out gapper to right-center field off Golde to plate Colin Spranger.
Lake Forest, which finished the last 20 games of the season with a 16-3-1 record, tallied single runs in the second and third inning.
The run in the first was all about hustle. Breck Nowik did some bold base-running, when he raced to the plate on a wild pitch — that didn’t go back to the backstop. He beat the relay throw on a bang-bang play.
LF’s other run was pure power. Senior shortstop Caleb Durbin smacked a home run over the left-field fence off Kocen to put the Scouts on top 2-0.
But Warren had a quick answer. The Blue Devils took advantage of a couple of walks off sophomore starter Connor Morrison and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third. The key blow was an RBI double by Nathan Rentas.
Golde, Peter Turelli and Matt Hill had LF’s other hits.
Lane Tech 7, New Trier 3
— No one saw this coming.
Host Lane Tech erupted for five runs in the sixth inning and claimed a stunning 7-3 victory over No. 2 seeded New Trier in a Class 4A regional title game Kerry Wood Field on May 26.
The Trevians, who held a 2-1 advantage through five innings, finished the season 22-10.
Lane Tech, seeded No. 7 in the Loyola Academy Sectional, outhit the Trevians 10-6.
NT’s Anthony Calarco had two hits and scored one run in the contest. Matt Roth went 1-for-3 with two runs.
Cam Redding (0-for-2) and Griff Ryan (1-for-1) drove in runs for the Trevians. Alex Calarco and Nate Shapiro had the team’s other hits.
Junior Andrew Kost got a no-decision. He threw 81 pitches and allowed five hits and two earned runs in five innings. Lane Tech tallied five of its seven runs against four NT relievers.

Warren 5, Highland Park 3
They battled to the end.
They usually did.
First-year Highland Park head coach Jason Newburger loved that about his team. Thus, it wasn’t a surprise that the Giants made things interesting in the top of the seventh inning in their 5-3 loss to Warren in a Class 4A regional semifinal game at Glenbrook North on May 24.
The potential tying run was on second, when the game ended.
“[Not giving up] has been our calling card all year,” said Newburger, “We were just one big hit away from tying the game.
“I’m proud of the guys,” the coach added.
The Giants (17-15-1) took the early lead in this one, when Noah Spitz singled and came home on a double by Tyler Gussis (3-for-4) in the top of the first inning.
Then, after Warren got that run back, HP went ahead again, 2-1, in the top of the second, when sophomore Danny Saslow (2-for-3) singled and scored on an error.
Warren, which was outhit by the Giants 7-6, took control of the game with a four-run third inning.
Enter Shutout Shutan.
Shortstop Noah Shutan came on in relief and pitched three hitless innings. He struck out eight and walked one.
“Just fastball and slider with a few curves mixed in,” said Shutan, who went 1-for-4 at the plate.
“Noah gave us a chance,” said Newburger. “And that’s how he’s been all year. He’s done a good job of pitching in tough situations.”
Shutan earned all-CSL North honors along with Gussis, Jack Greenwald and John Sakos.
Loyola Academy 4, Leyden 2
— Solid pitching by Ben Wagner lifted Loyola Academy to a 4-2 victory over Leyden in the Class 4A Notre Dame Regional on March 24.
Wagner went the distance on an eight-hitter. He finished with nine Ks and zero walks.
The Ramblers (20-9-1) scored their four runs on just three hits. Henry Haracz tripled home Johnny Mejia in the team’s three-run second inning. The other runs came around on Leyden miscues.
In the fourth inning, Matthew Raymond reached on a walk and eventually scored on a groundout by Jack Moran.
Will Jackson (single) and Jason Vrbancic (double) had LA’s other hits.
LA is set to play Notre Dame on May 26 (2 p.m.) in the regional title game.
Lane Tech 6, Glenbrook South 2
— Despite a strong offensive performance by Conor Nash, Glenbrook South had its season come to a close on May 24.
The Titans (11-20) dropped a 6-2 decision to host Lane Tech in a Class 4A regional semifinal.
Nash, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, and John Miskella opened up the seventh inning with back-to-back doubles.

Loyola Academy 7, Evanston 0
— Joe McKermitt was a hard guy to solve.
Just ask the Evanston hitters.
The host Wildkits didn’t make a lot of hard contact against the Loyola Academy left-hander on May 17.
With McKermitt in control of things, the Ramblers claimed a rather easy 7-0 victory to improve their overall record to 19-9-1.
“He’s really starting to settle in,” said LA head coach Nick Bridich. “He’s learning how not to waste pitches.”
And the kid’s got good stuff. McKermitt’s fastball has a lot of life and late tail action, while his off-speed stuff is very effective.
“His ball moves,” Bridich said. “He’s get a lot of called strikes.”
McKermitt, who worked the final five innings in relief of Ben Wagner, gave up just two hits. He fanned four and walked only one Evanston hitter.
Offensively, LA got things going right off the bat, scoring three runs in the top of the first and two more in the second inning.
“The game’s truly about having quality at-bats,” said Bridich. “We’ve done well with that this year.”
The Ramblers have shown plenty of thump this spring. But in this contest, hitting singles and drawing walks did the trick.
In LA’s three-run first, the key hits included a two-run single by Matthew Raymond and an RBI single to the opposite field by Will Jackson. Those two hits brought in Torain (single), Henry Haracz (single) and Jake Novak (walk).
In the second inning, the Ramblers used four walks and a hit batsmen to plate two runs.
Loyola went up 6-0 in the fifth, when Raymond scored on an RBI groundout by Dan Hrvojevec.
Then, in the sixth inning, Novak produced an insurance tally, when he lined a single to right to score Johnny Mejia, who opened the inning with a single and then stole second.
Loyola finished the Chicago Catholic League Blue Division with a 7-7 record.
“That’s the best record that we’ve ever had in the Blue Division,” said Bridich. “It’s the most competitive that we’ve ever been. We could’ve been 10-4 or 9-5.”
