A no charge Grocery Food Truck will roll up to Midwest Veterans Closet on Tuesday, April 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. courtesy of Rust-Oleum.
What is a Grocery Food Truck? It is a truck loaded with meat, fresh produce, dairy products, frozen foods, canned, boxed, and packaged items; enough for 200 families! Available while supplies last, sponsored by Rust-Oleum – FREE – Military or Veteran ID required.
Hunger is real. It’s in every community. In fact, one in four Veterans living in our community is hungry. The Midwest Veterans Closet Food Room opened in November 2015 when the Deerfield, IL Pee Wee football team adopted Midwest Veterans Closet as their Turkey Bowl charity. The children collected and donated over 100 shopping bags full of food! We immediately began distributing food to hungry Veterans. Due to increased need, our food room was renovated to a Food and Nutrition Resource Center. We are working with Northern Illinois Food Bank to help provide healthy and nutritious food for those families who have given so much for our country. We also work with the University of Illinois Extension Program to provide nutrition education and can offer SNAP assistance to any military family that walks through our doors. We have added pet food donated and supported by Our House of Hope, Libertyville, for service-related dogs and family pets as well. We also provide targeted support to our military families.
As we conclude our fourth year of serving those who serve(d) us, Midwest Veterans Closet staff, volunteers, and donors reflect on how we can do more for our military heroes and their families. Along with offering bags of groceries, spring jackets, sweatshirts, and sweaters will be available. We believe feeding folks and providing weather appropriate clothing is a basic need easy to fulfill.
