Studying my March Madness bracket, I’m filled with a growing sense of dread. Not because my selections are altogether wrong but rather because of the increasing likelihood of a Final Four matchup between Loyola Chicago and Michigan.
Like many sports fans, I harbor a soft spot for the underdog, particularly those from my hometown in the Chicago area, where the underdog often seems like the unofficial city mascot. With its 11th place ranking, Loyola is the quintessential underdog team this college basketball season. However, my spouse is a rabid Michigan fan. (That may be redundant. Aren’t all Wolverine fans rabid?)
While my head says, “Root for Michigan and keep the peace,” I’m donning maroon and gold anyway. It is indeed March Madness.
