HIGHLAND PARK – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great because greatness is determined by service.”
Each year, Americans across the country join together on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.
In the spirit of serving others, make Martin Luther King Day a day of giving back by participating in Highland Park’s 9th Annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday, January 15 from 10 AM – 2 PM at the Recreation Center of Highland Park, presented by The City of Highland Park’s Human Relations Commission and the Park District of Highland Park.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, will recount his experiences as a student of Dr. King. The Jesse White Tumblers will perform their amazing feats, and Highland Park’s Lynn Epps will present a portrait of Dr. King. Service projects include assembling toiletries for Hospitalized Veterans and the USO, creating Valentine messages for Operation Support Our Troops (Braeside PTO), creating Darfur paper dolls (Elm Place Middle School), decorating tablecloths for the USO (Wayne Thomas PTO), making cards for kids in hospitals (Northwood Middle School’s YESS), preparing warmth boxes for the less fortunate (Families Helping Families Chicagoland), and assembling creative care packages for survivors of domestic violence (Rotary Club).
Service vendors will collect a variety of donations for causes including toiletries and non-perishable food items for Moraine Township Food Pantry, gently used musical instruments for Ravinia Festival’s Reach, Teach & Play, glasses for Lions Club, toiletries for Veterans and the USO, coats, hats and gloves for Tree Hugs, and bicycles in any condition for Working Bikes. Drop off all donated items at the Highland Park Recreation Center between 10 AM – 12 PM.
There will be onsite parking, with overflow parking available at Wolters Field. For more information, contact Terry Grossberg at [email protected] or 847.204.4815.
