INSIDE THE PRESS BOX: BOYS SOCCER
Two basketball players — junior defender Gavin Morse and junior forward-midfielder Jimmy McMahon — proved how good they were on the soccer field this fall.
In helping Glenbrook South to a 12-7-4 record, the dynamic duo picked up all-sectional honors. Teammate Gabriel Diculescu, a senior midfielder, was honorable mention all-sectional.
That trio, along with senior goalkeeper Michael Hatfield, also were named to the all-CSL South team.
It turned out to be very good postseason for Hatfield. He also made the Chicago Fire All-State All-Academic (first-team) along with two teammates: senior midfielder Lucas Balbinot (third team) and senior goalkeeper Mateusz Odziomek (honorable mention).
Team awards went to Diculescu (MVP), Balbinot (Sportsmanship), Hatfield (Coaches’ Award), senior midfielder David Joseph (Coaches’ Award), senior midfielder Adam White (Sportsmanship), senior forward Jeremy Weber (Team Spirit-Hustle), senior defender Vincent Cozzone (Team Spirit-Hustle), senior forward Jonathan Hernandez (Most Improved) and senior midfield Henry Huynh (Most Improved).
Hatfield finished the season with a 1.18 goals-against average with a seven and half shutouts.
McMahon ended up leading the Titans in points (22) with team highs in goals (8) and assists (6).
The other offensive leaders included Weber (5 goals, 5 assists), junior midfielder Matthew Ruth (4 goals, 5 assists), Joseph (5 goals, 2 assists), Balbinot (4 goals, 1 assist) and Hernandez (2 goals, 3 assists).
