SCOREBOARD WATCHING: CLUB SWIM
Maddie Smith definitely stood out.
And so did several others from the DailyNorthShore.com area.
Smith, Sam Iida, Charlie Scheinfeld, Shannon Kearney and Audrey Richardson were among the headliners at the 2017 Illinois Swimming Senior Championships at the Pleasant Prairie Rec Plex on July 13-16.
Lake Forest’s Smith, who competes for the Patriot Aquatic Club, zoomed to first-place finishes in the 50 free (26.22) and 100 free (57.32). Both of her wins were meet records.
The University of North Carolina recruit also took the gold in the 400 free relay with Isabelle Pelka, Maxine Parker and Sophia Goushchina in meet-record time (3:55.38). And she was a member of two third-place relays: 400 medley (4:21.94) and 800 free (8:40.01).
Glenbrook South’s Iida, who will swim at the University of Arizona, took first place in two events: 200-meter freestyle (1:52.89) and 400 free (4:01.29). His clocking in the 400 free set a new meet record.
Swimming for the Glenview Titan Aquatic Club (GTAC), Iida also teamed with Michael Hadjiivanov, Jacob Shapiro and Elliot Chan to take fourth in the 400 medley relay (4:01.85).
Scheinfeld, who has accepted a scholarship to the University of Texas, was a major producer for the New Trier Swim Club, which scored 336.5 points to place third behind Academy Bullets (900) and St. Charles Swim Club (713.5) in the boys team standings.
Scheinfeld, who will be a senior at New Trier, placed third in the 100 free (52.61), fourth in the 200 IM (2:11.51) and fifth in the 200 free (1:57.43). And he also was a member of two winning relays: 400 medley (3:54.32, a meet record) and 400 free (3:31.86). His mates in both relays included Ryan Gridley, Patrick Gridley and Daniel McGowan.
Ryan Gridley added a ninth in the 200 free (1:59.45), while Patrick Gridley placed sixth in the 200 IM (2:12.03), ninth in the 100 free (54.38) and 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.12).
McGowan added a 10th in the 100 free (55.11), while he teamed with Nicholas Torre, Jack Walter and Tommy Wilson to take eighth in the 800 free relay (8:10.94).
Kearney, who will be a senior at Loyola Academy this fall, claimed the 100 backstroke title in 1:03.97. A member of the New Trier Swim Club, she will swim at North Carolina State.
Richardson, who helped NTSC to a fourth-place finish (261.5) in the girls team standings, earned runner-up honors in the 200 IM (2:24.39). She also fared well in three relays.
She teamed with Lily Kurzydlo, Margaret Guanci and Joelle Ohr in the 400 free (4th, 3:39.71). Her relay mates in the 400 medley (4th, 4:23.20) included Ohr, Vivian Wu and Kasey Venn. And she combined forces with Ohr, Madeleine Hines and Ceola Halloran in the 800 free (8th, 8:55.04).
Ohr added a sixth in the 100 free (59.07) and a seventh in the 50 free (27.26), while Venn placed seventh in the 100 breast (1:14.24) and ninth in the 200 IM (2:25.86).
