  1. The writing was on the wall when the government forced Illinois Bell and the Bell System to break up its “monopoly”! It was a perfectly working telephone system that made everyone safe. There were actual people on the line that you could talk to if you had a question about your bill or your service. If your phone broke or something didn’t work properly,, you just called 611 and they would bring you a new phone and fix your problem. No appointment or extra charge–a technician was always on call in the neighborhood. But there wasn’t “competition” and the government didn’t think it was “fair”–regardless of the fact that no one had any complaints about it. The end of an era…
