HIGHLAND PARK — A Lake County criminal court judge will decide who shot Colin Nutter, a then 20-year-old Highland Park man, in the back of the head during an attempted drug deal nearly four years ago in Highland Park, according to a Chicago Tribune story.
After four days of testimony with 25 witnesses finished April 20, Lake County Circuit Court Judge Victoria Rossetti will decide if the Philip Vatamaniuc, 21, also of Highland Park, and the current defendant in the trial, pulled the trigger, according to the Tribune. Vatamaniuc is one of three men charged. The others are Benjamin Schenk, now 24, of Highwood, and Michael Coffee of Highland Park. Coffee has been declared unfit to stand trial.
Vatamaniuc initially told police Schenk was the shooter, according to the Tribune. Schenk later pled guilty hoping to receive a lighter prison sentence in exchange for his testimony. Schenk said in court Vatamaniuc pulled the trigger. Vatamaniuc’s lawyer discounted Schenk’s testimony to Rossetti because of Schenk’s self interest.
