— Highlighted by DJ Penick, Alex Rosenbloom and Steven Weathers, Highland Park came in ninth in the team standings at the Lake Park Invite on Dec. 17.
Penick claimed the 182 title. After pinning his first two opponents, the senior standout topped Conant’s Lee Fuller 8-1 in the championship.
Rosenbloom placed second at 145 pounds after losing a 4-3 decision in the final against Warren’s Grant Zamin.
Weathers took third at 152 pounds. He defeated Stagg’s Ahmed Suleiman 5-4 in the third-place bout.
Russ Erb Invite
— Host Glenbrook South finished 11th (62 points) in its own 17-team Russ Erb Invite on Dec. 16-17. Loyola (13th, 52 points) and Glenbrook North (14th, 49 points) also competed. Wheeling scored 222 points to take first place.
Ethan Bond of Glenbrook South ended up third at 132 pounds. Other GBS placers were Daniel Pravich (4th, 152) and Branko Andelkovic (5th, 195).
LA’s top efforts were turned in by Andrew Gonzalez (3rd, 195) and Peter Kennedy (6th, 170).
GBN’s Brandon Friedman earned runner-up honors at 220.
— New Trier finished 19th (60 points) in the 24-team Hinsdale Central on Dec. 16-17.
The three place-winners were Jack Tangen (7th, 126), Nick Elias (8th, 132) and Patrick Ryan (5th, 138).
Lake Zurich 60, Lake Forest 12
— Caleb Durbin and Marko Tupanjac were bright spots for Lake Forest in its 60-12 setback to host Lake Zurich on Dec. 16.
At 152, Durbin pinned LZ’s Matt Grom in 2:23.
At 160, Tupanic won by fall over LZ’s Nick DiMaggio in 1:01.
Libertyville 69, Lake Forest 6
— Quinn Dailey and Cory Barth were Lake Forest’s lone winners in a 69-6 loss to visiting Libertyville on Dec. 12.
Barth topped Konnor Lindsey 7-3 at 195 pounds.
Dailey scored a 3-1 victory over Libertyville’s Drew Onufer at 126 pounds.
Buffalo Grove Invite
— Led by the runner-up finishes by Ethan Bond (132) and Daniel Pravich (152), Glenbrook South finished sixth in the 14-team Buffalo Grove Rex Lewis Invite on Dec. 10.
GBS’s other placers were Ben Schonken (6th, 120), Brian Lau (4th, 160), Andrew Karr (4th, 182), Branko Andelkovic (5th, 195) and Alex Balabanos (6th, 285).
— New Trier (9th, 91 1/2 points), Glenbrook North (11th, 72 points) and Loyola (14th, 46 1/2 points) competed in the 17-team Prospect Invite on Dec. 10.
NT’s place-winners were Matt McKenna (7th, 120), Nick Elias (4th, 132), Patrick Ryan (3rd, 138), Bayne Kiser (6th, 162), Bruno Frost (5th, 160), Russell Sanchez (7th, 170) and Jake Lowell (6th, 195).
GBN was led by Kazden Orschoski (6th, 106), Gio Kollias (5th, 132), Jake Fahey (6th, 138), Cam Casey (7th, 182), Brandon Friedman (2nd, 220) and Jacob Weingardt (5th, 285).
Loyola’s placers were Aiden McKeag (5th, 126), Quinn McCarthy (7th, 132), John Flanagan (8th, 162) and Andrew Gonzalez (3rd, 195).
Hinsdale South Invite
— Three Highland Park wrestlers earned titles at the Matozzi Invite at Hinsdale South on Dec. 3.
Junior Alex Rosenbloom was the champion at 145 pounds. He edged Hinsdale South’s Easa Aristizabal 3-2 in the title bout.
Steven Weathers of the Giants took first at 152 pounds. The senior recorded two falls before beating Plainfield East’s Robert Ogbuli by a major decision (16-4) in the championship.
DJ Penick claimed the 195-pound title. He decisioned Trey Lally 8-4 in the final.
The Giants, who finished fourth in the team standings (134 1/5 points), had six other placers: Jet Kouletis (4th, 113), Aiden Sanders (5th, 120), Aiden Rosenbloom (4th, 126), Martin Melchor (4th, 160), Nick Drummond (4th, 170) and Juan Melgar (5th, 182).
— Lake Forest senior Marko Tupanjac was earned the “Outstanding Wrestler” award at the Richmond-Burton Invite on Dec. 3.
Tupanjac claimed the 160-pound title and helped the Scouts to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.
LF’s other champions were freshman Jackson Meadow at 113 pounds and junior Quinn Dailey at 126 pounds.
Junior Caleb Durbin earned runner-up honors a 152 pounds, while senior Andrew Tuttle was third at 138 pounds.
The team also had two fourth-place finishes in junior Ryan Durburg at 182 and senior Cory Barth at 195.
Warren 45, Lake Forest 6
— Lake Forest managed to win only two matches against host Warren on Dec. 1.
In the 45-6 defeat, LF’s winners were Caleb Durbin and Marko Tupanjac. Durbin won 5-2 at 152, while Tupanjac earned a 15-9 win at 160.
— Lake Forest placed second in the Carmel Dual Team Tournament on Nov. 26 with 5-2 record.
LF’s wins came over Carmel 40-28, North Chicago 52-18, St. Patrick 44-30, Waukegan 54-27 and Richmond-Burton 53-24.
The Scouts fell to West Chicago 43-42 and Marian Central Catholic 45-33.
