HIGHLAND PARK – The Park District of Highland Park will host its 9th Annual Firecracker 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk. This has become a fixture over the 4th of July holiday. Its a family friendly event and everyone is invited. Please read the following for event details:
More than 150 runners and walkers will take part in the 9th annual Firecracker family fun event kicking-off the 4th of July holiday weekend at Sunset Woods Park on Sunday, July 3 at 8 a.m. T
he 5K run and 2-mile walk will benefit the Park District of Highland Park SMILE Grant-in-Aid Fund. SMILE enables families in need of financial assistance the opportunity to participate in Park District programs and is funded through generous donations from residents and local businesses. In the last year, $100,000 in grants were awarded to over 85 Highland Park families through this worthwhile program.
Runners start in the beautiful tree covered Sunset Woods Park. The course travels through the streets of downtown Highland Park toward Park Ave. Beach. Runners will have a picturesque view of Lake Michigan as they approach the beach and will be tested by a steep incline as they exit the beach area. The final mile of the course is flat and fast. Runners finish back at Sunset Woods where they can recharge with refreshments before the post event celebration and awards. Walkers follow a similar path bypassing the business district and lakefront. The event is sponsored by: Highland Park Bank & Trust, First Bank of Highland Park, Mark Vend and North Shore University Health System – Highland Park Hospital.
