The League of Women Voters of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff applauds the Illinois General Assembly for passing legislation to make it a felony offense to buy illegal firearms out of state and bring them into Illinois to sell, thus avoiding the background check that Illinois requires.
Gun trafficking across state lines is a major source of the weapons used in Chicago gun violence. Raising the offense to a felony level should discourage such trafficking. Federal background check legislation would have an even more significant impact, but this is a helpful step in the right direction.
The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization which encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
