WILMETTE – McKenzie Elementary students celebrated the beautiful fall weather on October 7 by participating in National Walk Bike to School Day. Located just west of the village, McKenzie is in a central location that enables the majority of its students to walk or bike to school.
Started in 2011, the event was organized by the school’s Green Committee and is also part of Environmental Awareness Week.
“We are hoping that promoting this school wide event, both kids and parents alike will join in on the fun and learn that it is safe, healthy, environmentally friendly and fun to walk or bike to school,” said committee chair Alicia Cirrincione.
Organizers mapped out four designated Walking Bus Stops where students and parents could meet to walk or bike to school together. A parent-volunteer waited at each bus stop with a sign picturing a school bus for students to proudly carry as they walked to school.
Alan Hatchett met at the corner of Ridge Road and Highland Avenue with his two sons who attend McKenzie. “I like that they do it. It is great to encourage a walking culture,” Hatchett said.
