WILMETTE – The corner of Central Street and Green Bay Road was bustling with activity on Oct. 6 as a scene for the popular Fox TV show Empire was filmed at Lawrence Deans Bake Shop. Lawrence Deans’ became “Pepper & Sons Bakery” for the show, while Central Street was changed to “Evergreen Ave.”
Central Street was lined with white vans and trucks marked Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. and a portion of the street was blocked off from traffic. Crew members mingled in the bakery’s parking lot, as residents and fans of the show tried to catch a glimpse of the action.
Wilmette resident Amanda Doblin walked over to the set pushing her young daughter in a stroller, even though she has never seen the show. “I am a fan of things being filmed. It’s nice for Wilmette,” she said.
Others checking out the scene were loyal fans of Empire, hoping to sight one of the main stars. Diana Mayer of Northbrook and Susie Parker of Glencoe hovered closely to the set with iPhones in hand, pleased they were able to catch a brief view of Taraji Henson, the actress who plays Cookie Lyon in the drama series, as she stepped out of the bakery.
The drama series starring Terrence Howard and Taraji Henson deputed in January 2015 and is centered on hip hop music and entertainment company Empire Entertainment.
