Letter to the editor from Karen Rafeedie: I’m voting yes on both lakefront referenda in Wilmette. Here’s why. After moving to Wilmette 9 years ago, I remember the first day we took our family to Gillson beach. The beach itself was glorious. But I was shocked that our lovely lakefront was equipped with such poor, rundown facilities. I cringed when I had to take my toddler to the bathroom. Today, it’s no better. In fact, these facilities have been deemed hazardous.
That we’re not all enthusiastically embracing these necessary improvements has me scratching my head. Have we as residents, just accepted these conditions? Is it really acceptable that Langdon Beach has only a single “porta potty” for all beach staff and visitors? I think not.
These are basic improvements that are necessary to enable us to enjoy our beaches with greater safety and accessibility. It’s an investment that is more responsible thaN trying to repair and maintain the current outdated structures.
Finally, for the people worried that the improvements are going to attract “riffraff” to our beaches, shame on you. Is that what we want Wilmette to be known for? I for one want to raise my kids in a welcoming community that proudly shares its public parks and beautiful beaches with all families. I’m hoping you do too. Vote yes!
