The lakefront still seems otherworldly. Crashing waves have frozen along the shoreline, creating cavelike structures with icicles that hang like stalactites from within. On Sunday evening, standing on the edge at Sunrise Beach in Lake Bluff, you could just make out the sound of crackling ice as the moon rose over miles and miles of frozen space.
