NORTHBROOK – More than 270 stakeholders – representing educators, legislators, service agencies, insurance companies, department of corrections, families, hospitals and more – will meet for a Mental Health Symposium on Thursday, February 26, to explore new strategies to help students requiring mental health resources better transition from school systems into the community.
The symposium event, titled “Transforming the Future for Young Adults,” represents the first time Chicago area stakeholders will come together on the topic and brainstorm potential solutions.
“The number of students requiring intensive mental health resources is increasing in all school districts and it is essential to improve our connection to the community and support systems to enable better outcomes for them,” said Jennifer Pearson, District 225 Director of Special Education.
Pearson partnered with Districts 225 and 214 educators to bring the Symposium to the Forest View Education Center Theater in Arlington Heights. They will be joined by prominent Chicago and state agency leaders to explore common challenges, develop new strategies and share resources to address shared goals of supporting young adults with mental health needs in their transition to adulthood.
Glenbrook North: Two GBN soccer players sign letters of intent

GBN senior soccer players Ethan Glass and Jake Santellano commit to play their sport collegiately as part of National Signing Day.
On Friday, February 13, as part of National Spring Signing Day, two GBN soccer players signed Letters of Intent, committing themselves to continue playing their sport collegiately.
Jake Santellano and Ethan Glass have played soccer together since they were nine years old and said the accomplishment is meaningful for both of them to commit together.
“My favorite memories are times with my teammates and coaches,” said Santellano. “They’ve supported us and gotten us to where we are today.”
“We all played on different travel soccer teams throughout the season so it was special to come together every fall and represent GBN together,” agreed Glass.
Glass will continue his collegiate soccer career with Occidental College in California. Santellano has committed to play collegiately for University of Wisconsin- Whitewater.
GBN Debate team earns tournament championship
This past week GBN Debate had much success. At the Pine Crest Round Robin in Fort Lauderdale, Florida – an event reserved for 12 of the best teams in the country – the team of Ryan Spector (Sr)/Anthony Trufanov (Jr) won their wheel and the Round Robin finals, earning them the title of champions for the entire competition. The team of Jonah Jacobs (So)/Ben Mnushkin (So) earned 2nd place in their wheel. Ryan was named 2nd speaker and Anthony was named 5th speaker overall.
At the Crestian National Invitation in Fort Lauderdale, Florida the team of Ryan Spector (Sr)/Anthony Trufanov (Jr) earned 2nd place. The team of Jonah Jacobs (So)/Ben Mnushkin (So) earned 5th place, and the team of Jeremy Hoffen (Sr)/Jacob Rose (Jr) earned 9th place. Ryan was named 3rd speaker Anthony was named 10th speaker, Ben was named 12th speaker, and Jonah was named 13th speaker overall.
GBN artists selected for special IHSAE showcase
For the second year, the Illinois High School Art Exhibition will showcase the top work of more than 200 high school artists and this year, five Glenbrook North artists will have their work on display.
The prestigious IHSAE show will be held on Sunday, March 1, at the Zhou B. Gallery in Chicago. More than 500 students from 100 different schools entered into the competition for the chance to have their work celebrated by the public, viewed by top colleges and universities and entered into an opportunity to receive a scholarship.
The GBN selected artists include Rachel Kaplan in Photography, Brittany Huang in Drawing, Sungkung(Annie) Yoon in Painting, Joshua Zaacks in Graphic Design and Gianni Pappas in 3-Dimensional. In addition, 2001 GBN Alum In Jung Oh, an internationally known professional artist with a studio inside Zhou B. Art Center, will be attend as a sponsor of the exhibition.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. Awards and scholarships will be announced at 2:00p.m.
Glenbrook South: Model UN heads to prestigious DC tournament

Seven GBS student are selected as winners of a Model UN essay contest. They will receive a private tour of the White House on Friday, March 20.
Glenbrook South Model UN will head to Washington D.C. from March 18 to 21, intent on capturing a competition win and a token to remember it by: a selfie with the President.
As part of the highly competitive Washington Area Model UN Conference, GBS Model UN members entered into a competitive essay contest with the conference’s 1,200 students, answering prompting on which 20th century world leader they would meet and why; and what topic they would choose to speak on at the UN headquarters and why.
A total of 22 students were chosen as winners, seven of them GBS students, to receive a private tour of the White House. Winning essayists include Billy Kosmidis, Jane Brennan, Stephanie Smelyansky, Ruhi Bhaidani, Jin Kim, Grace Kilpatrick and Lori Steffel.
“We do hope President Obama is home that morning. A few selfies might be memorable,” said Model UN sponsor Terry Jozwik.
