  1. Mrs. Shields:

I found your husband’s story on Atul Gawande’s documentary Being Mortal. I want to thank you for speaking to Dr. Gawande. I am grateful to your husband. I learned a lot from you both about courage and decency. Though you do not know me, I wanted to let you know what I think of you.

  2. I am looking for Genie Shields. Genie, so long ago you and Jeff and your dear family were members of a neighborhood childcare group on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. called All of Us. Do you remember how scared Comfort was of the Easter Bunny and how you spent long hours at night teaching a group of us how to operate a potter’s wheel. Thank you for sharing your talent. Thank you for all the work on the cookbook, the pottery lessons, the warmth and caring of the young children, and the belief that men and women in a supportive community could work together to help care for the youngest members of our families. I am longing to communicate with you. If you get a moment, please call or email. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jeff but it was no surprise that your family dealt with this loss in an intelligent, caring, and loving way. The FrontLine piece was inspiring . It showed you are still teaching and sharing your experiences- helping us all in this human venture .
