Submitted by Cub Scout dad Jim Foley for Lake Forest Cub Scout Pack 48:
Lake Forest Cub Scout Pack 48 recently hosted the Blue & Gold Banquet at the Lake Forest Club. MC’d by Co-Cubmasters Mike Borkowski and Jim Holmes and Committee Chair Mike Moyer, the annual celebration recognized the achievements of 72 Cub Scouts over the past year as well as the efforts of more than 27 parent volunteers. In addition to traditional Cub Scout events such as camping trips and the Pinewood Derby, the scouts and leadership of Pack 48 go the extra mile planning enrichment events. Representative events include overnight trips on a WWII Submarine and at the Shed Aquarium, tree climbing with ropes and harnesses, a tour of a local label printing manufacturing plant, and community service opportunities such as packing international food relief shipments through “Feed My Starving Children” in Libertyville. While the ice cream sundae bar came in a close second for some, the highlight of the evening came after dinner when members of the Venture Scouts and Boy Scouts from Lake Forest Boy Scout Troop 48, performed the Arrow of Light ceremony and a traditional Native American Grass Dance with regalia sewn by Menomonee craftspeople. The ceremony marks the crossing-over of six (6) second year Cub Scout Webelos into Boy Scouts. The annual Blue and Gold Banquet also serves as the “Friends of Scouting” fundraiser for the Northeast Illinois Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which helps to support programming, facilities operations, leadership training, and providing greater access to scouting through financial assistance (neic.org/donate).
