Members of the Lake County-based Alpha Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma were recently notified by the Lambda State Foundation for Educational Studies that their recent stipend application had been accepted. The $600.00 stipend, written by member Rosemary Troxel for the chapter, will be used to purchase abridged Reading Recovery Programs as well as books for classroom libraries for Reading Power, Inc., a not-for-profit organization. Reading Power serves the children of North Chicago, Illinois, by providing early literacy interventions. One-on-one tutoring is provided for K-2 students through an independent tutoring program in partnership with the schools.
The Lambda State Foundation for Educational studies provides funds for members who wish to develop special projects related to the improvement of education primarily in Illinois. Members met Tuesday, June 18 to present the check to Reading Power, Inc Executive Director, Rebecca Mullen and members of the Reading Power Board—Mary Jane Hender, co-founder of the organization; Beverly Raudabaugh; and Duane Wise, Board President. Representing Alpha Nu are co-presidents, Teta Minuzzo, Sandra Moran; Reading Power, Inc. volunteers and Alpha Nu members Helene Bernard and Cynthia Dale; and grant writer, Rosemary Troxel.
