If you’ve been down Route 41 in Lake Forest, you have certainly seen the rapid development of the new Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. Since 2010, careful planning for the new Lake Forest Hospital has been in the works. After approval by the city in 2012, the new state-of-the-art destination for health, wellness, and civic enjoyment is almost ready. The Women’s Board is also preparing for the Grand Opening Gala in February; an occasion not to miss.
The new state-of-the-art hospital will provide patients with access to compassionate care, renowned medical experts, and exceptional service as well as a seamless pathway to Northwestern Medicine specialty care. The thoughtful design of the 160-acre campus integrates medical care with health and wellness through walking and biking trails as well as a new common area for community activity and enjoyment.
The new Lake Forest Hospital emphasizes sustainable construction and design, and has focused on reduced energy consumption, decreased water use, increased recycling, and improvements in ambient noise and lighting.
Women’s Board members and Grand Opening Gala co-chairs Denise Bunning and Holli Volkert are excited about the many new features exhibited by the campus.
“The hospital will provide the community with unprecedented access to leading-edge technology and the exceptional clinical programs of Northwestern Medicine. If you have to be in a hospital, this is a beautiful, hopeful, and serene place to be,” says Bunning.
Volkert adds, “I am a big proponent of quality mental health care. Now that we have such a high-caliber institution as a base, interconnected with the spectacular support of Northwestern Medicine, I know it is just the beginning of growth in additional specialties such as mental health, auto-immune diseases, and integrative medicine within our local community.”
The two women have personal ties to the new hospital as well.
Volkert and her family have become very close to hospital President Thomas McAfee and his family after becoming neighbors in 2006. She shares, “I have had the privilege of following the development of this project closely since day one—from the merger with Northwestern Medicine to the hiring of world-class architects, creating thoughtfully designed layouts to maximize the inner workings of the facility, to securing funding support in the most ambitious campaign in Lake Forest history. I remember sitting in the McAfee kitchen when Tom pulled out initial drawings that showed the lake and waterfall and how the overall concept was to give the building a calming feel to it.”
Bunning and her husband felt compelled to donate directly to the hospital’s emergency department after a sudden death of a close friend in Lake Forest. The family also felt compelled to create the Sunshine Boutique in the Cancer Center after Bunning’s mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer. The space is dedicated to helping patients maintain a positive outlook and appearance while receiving care at the hospital.
The new campus is sure to bring the entire community closer together through all of its unique features and touching elements. The Women’s Board is excited to share the stunning new facility with the public just a few weeks before it opens its doors to treat patients.
“Since this is the largest single construction project in our community’s history, the grand opening will certainly reflect that. It is an event for all the guests and supporters of this project to be in one room as they view the new hospital, many for the first time, and truly celebrate what they have accomplished working together. It will be unlike anything the Women’s Board has ever hosted,” says Volkert.
The event on February 10, 2018 will be the first opportunity for the public to take a look inside the new facility and celebrate all that the new hospital has to offer. The truly special occasion will kickoff with festive cocktails and guests strolling through the new public spaces followed by a formal dinner. True to the Women’s Board annual benefit, unique fundraising opportunities will be available throughout the evening. The new Lake Forest Hospital fully opens for patient care in March 2018.
