Grieving children and teens were treated to a day of fun on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, when the AMITA St. Thomas Hospice hosted a Winter Carnival with the help of the Hinsdale Assembly.
Held at the Oak Brook Park District, the 2017 Hinsdale Assembly Debutantes and Honor Guard led children who have participated in Tommy’s Kids programs in an afternoon of games and entertainment including “ice” fishing, penguin bowl, snowball fights and reindeer ring toss, along with fun crafts and a hot chocolate bar.
AMITA St. Thomas Hospice, a division of AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale, began Tommy’s Kids, a children’s grief support group, 12 years ago. It has grown to include monthly Family Nights, a week-long summer camp and a weekend camp, Camp Erin, held each fall.
The efforts of the Hinsdale Assembly directly benefit the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. In 2013, the Hinsdale Assembly announced a 10-year, $1,000,000 commitment to the AMITA Health Cancer Institute. As of year-end 2016, the Assembly Board has reached 85% of this goal. Since 1963, with the loyal support of parents, patrons and sponsors, the Hinsdale Assembly Board has contributed over $2.7 million for special projects and the purchase of state of the art medical equipment.
