When Kris Berger was showing a lifelong friend a potential home in the western suburbs, Berger never thought she’d be the one to end up buying the home. “There was a house on Jefferson Street that my client passed on, and I told her she should buy the house because it’s such a great house, but they decided on another,” says Berger. “But I couldn’t stop thinking about the house, so we bought it and never looked back.”
The fortuitous event led her back to Hinsdale where Berger grew up. “I attended Monroe and Hinsdale Central,” say Berger. “I know this area so well. The charm has not changed over the years.” Given that Berger grew up in the area, and seeing as how her husband is one of 13 kids and they all, but one, live in the western suburbs, she knows the area better than most. “There are 43 cousins in the area,” laughs Berger. “It’s really so nice to have that.”
Berger began her career doing design work and staging homes 25 years ago for residential and commercial agents for their downtown properties. After earning her real estate license, she moved to La Grange from the city but still had numerous friends in Chicago. “All of my friends wanted to move to the suburbs, so I found all of these cute fixer-uppers for them,” explains Berger.
“Through that process, I realized how much I loved selling homes.” Her valuable design and staging experience has helped clients both prepare to sell a home and to see the potential of what a home could be. Berger, who touts a creative side, enjoys walking into a house with first-time buyer clients and showing them what the house’s potential is. She also enjoys helping clients prepare to sell a home that they have lived in for 10-20 years.
First-time buyers are only a part of Berger’s clientele. Oftentimes, her clients are looking to either downsize to lower maintenance living or upgrade to luxury homes. Either way, the clients have repeatedly used Berger in their real estate transactions, which she considers the biggest compliment one can get. “I’m at a point right now where I have experience to give to younger buyers, but I also have clients that I sold houses to 18 years ago and they continue to come back to me,” Berger adds.
About a year and a half ago, Berger decided to hire a fulltime assistant, Lauren, which has helped tremendously. “I have so much more time to focus solely on clients now,” says Berger.
“Lauren handles the office work and works closely with our marketing department so I can be out with the clients. We are really a good team.”
Another feature of Berkshire Hathaway-Koenig Rubloff that Berger sees as a major advantage is the family-like atmosphere fostered within its offices. “We work as a unified team,” says Berger.
Berger also credits The Luxury Program at Berkshire Hathaway as a key to her success as a realtor. The luxury department assists realtors like Berger with luxury homes by providing beautiful brochures and feature books, along with a specific marketing strategies, to advertise the higher priced homes in the area. “We could not do what we do without our Luxury Department,” concedes Berger. “They are so amazing.”
Throughout the years, Berger has seen families come and go, but that only makes her love her job more. “I truly love finding the right fit for people and I truly believe that everything is meant to be—especially when it comes to finding a home,” says Berger, smiling. “I feel fortunate to say that I was a part of creating the right fit for them.”
