Bach Week Festival: ‘Dueling Divas’

April 28 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

$10 - $30

The opening concert of the the 44th annual Bach Week Festival will feature the festival debuts of two North Shore-based classical singers of international stature. Soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg, of Wilmette, has sung at the Arizona Bach Festival, the Boulder Bach Festival and with the St. Louis Bach Society and Cincinnati Bach Ensemble. British-born, Canadian mezzo-soprano Susan Platts, of Evanston, is a favorite of revered German choral conductor Helmuth Rilling, who is a founder of the Oregon Bach Festival, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, and other Bach academies. She has performed with Rilling on numerous occasions.  Other opening-night artists are returning Bach Week favorites Jason Moy, harpsichord, and North Shore native Dawn Gingrich, violin.  Richard Webster, the event’s music director since 1975,  will conduct the Bach Week Festival Orchestra.

The concert program includes J. S. Bach’s Sonata in B Minor for Violin and Harpsichord, BWV 1014; Duet: “Wir eilen” from Cantata 78; Cantata 54: “Widerstehe doch der Sünde”;  Duet: “Christe eleison” from Mass in B Minor, BWV 232; and Cantata 202: “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten.”
