HIGHLAND PARK – Highland Park is planning its 9th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. This is a huge endeavor with many opportunities for people of all ages to support local organizations and causes. It’s sponsored by the City of Highland Park Human Relations Commission and the Park District of Highland Park.
Here what you need to know to get going:
WHAT: More than 1,300 Highland Park residents will come together for a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior and his legacy. The 9th Annual Day of Service event is presented by the City of Highland Park Human Relations Commission and the Park District of Highland Park. Attendees will participate in 30 service projects supporting veterans and military families, helping those less fortunate, and supporting environmental causes. Donations will be accepted at the event including food for Moraine Township Food Pantry, glasses for Lions Club, instruments for Ravinia Foundation, toiletries for Veterans and USO, plus bicycles for Working Bikes. The Honorable Jesse White, Illinois Secretary of State, will recount his experiences as a student of Dr. King, and the Jesse White Tumblers will perform their amazing feats. Highland Park’s very own Lynn Epps will perform a portrait of Dr. King, and the Edgewood chorus will perform a variety of civic minded songs. The purpose of this annual event is to encourage the public to spend this federal holiday in ways befitting King’s legacy to create a stronger community.
