WINNETKA – A new store has popped into the village’s East Elm Street business district: The Cashmere Sale is at 574 Lincoln Avenue will only be in Winnetka until November 19.
“People should get in here sooner rather than later,” owner Denise Borkowski told DailyNorthShore.
Everything in the shop is cashmere of varying weights, styles and colors. Samples hang on the walls and racks and boxes labeled with a picture and price hold various sizes and colors. All of the items bare the label “The Cashmere Project,” which can be found at upscale national department stores. And since the products are sourced directly from the manufacturer, all of the prices are significantly reduced.
Shoppers can choose from all different types of sweaters, such as trendier designs with sayings or embellished with sequins or rabbit furs, to updated classics such as a lightweight California t-shirt style. But there are also plenty of other options besides just sweaters, including hats, gloves, baby blankets, ponchos, capes and scarves.
“The whole North Shore is a great community for what we are doing,” Borkowski said.
Borkowski worked in the fashion industry for years with companies such as Levi Strauss and Esprit. About 8 years ago, she connected with Republic Clothing through a friend, a company that does private labels for department stores and produces The Cashmere Project line. At first, Borkowski sold the line out of friends’ homes, including some on the North Shore.
Eventually, the company expanded to 25 locations across the country and stopped selling out of people’s homes. Borkowski said she has done pop-up store previously in Winnetka — she now lives in Chicago but used to live in Winnetka — and last year held a pop-up in Wilmette.
Since becoming a seasonal pop-up store Borkowski has found that other retailers in the area like her business model because she brings new customers to the downtown. “I bring a lot of new traffic in the neighborhood that they like. It is a win-win,” she said.
Borkowski maintains an email list of her customers, alerting them of when there will be a pop-up sale. She has dedicated following, with many repeat customers coming into update their own wardrobe or buy a gift for the holidays.
New this season The Cashmere Sale is offering mens’ sweaters. Borkowski said the womens’ lightweight California sweaters have been particularly popular. “It’s just great and easy to wear. A good layering piece,” she said. Things have been flying of the shelves, but customers can now order online if the store does not have the correct size.
