The North Shore Women’s Platform Tennis League will host its 21st annual Court the Cure event on Thursday, September 28. Nearly 300 players are expected to participate in the Platform Tennis fundraiser. Participation is spread across more than 24 clubs in the North Shore and western suburbs. A Pro-Amateur Tournament will also be held at the Winnetka Platform Tennis facility including 12 women players from various clubs and 12 pros from various clubs.
All proceeds will support research on quality of care, led by Katharine Yao, MD of NorthShore University HealthSystem.
“We have fun playing paddle with friends for a great cause. The supporters of Court the Cure have made a real difference by funding breast cancer research at NorthShore. While the work is local, the impact is national.,” says Debbie Learner, Court the Cure event co-chair.
Proceeds from Court the Cure will support a national survey overseen by Dr. Yao, chief of Division of Surgical Oncology (specializing in breast cancer) and Vice Chair of Research and Development at NorthShore. It will assess the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, physicians’ attitudes about treatment options for noninvasive breast cancer and double mastectomy, and evaluate physicians’ knowledge about breast cancer recurrence. “This research will help physicians to determine the best quality of care treatments for patients,” said Dr. Yao.
This new research has implications for women across the country who are facing breast cancer, including Reagan Knauss of Deerfield. As an avid supporter of breast cancer issues, Knauss has participated in Court the Cure for the last 10 years. This year, she is returning as a breast cancer survivor, and is even more connected to the cause. “So many people we know are affected so I wanted to support the cause, even before I was diagnosed. When you get hit with that news, it changes everything,” she explains. “It means more to me now, to get out there see all these women who are participating and supporting something special.”
