A new restaurant will open in the former location of Fred’s Mobil service station at 574 Green Bay Road in Winnetka, in late August to early September. Aptly named Fred’s Garage, the restaurant will be operated by the owners of the popular Ten Mile House in Evanston.
“Our focus is to get Fred’s Garage open,” Robert LaPata told DailyNorthShore.
The new restaurant will have indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a walk-up window for customers who prefer to grab a snack instead of ordering from the full-service menu. The extensive patio space will also include games for customers to play while they have a drink or wait for their food.
Similar to Ten Mile House, the menu will be contemporary American that is accessible to many ages and demographics, LaPata said.
While rumors have been swirling that Fred’s Garage will also serve donuts from DB3 Donuts — a weekend bakery next to Ten Mile House — for now they are focused on opening the new restaurant. LaPata added they would eventually like to expand DB3 Donuts and find a seven-day a week location somewhere on the North Shore.
The building was purchased in March 2016 by Alfred Stepan, a managing director at SVN, a commercial real estate firm in Chicago. Since then, the service station’s underground tanks were removed from the property and the existing building was extensively renovated and expanded.
LaPata said the kitchen equipment is being installed, and he expects construction to be complete in about four weeks.
As for the name Fred’s Garage? “At the end of the day everyone knows this as Fred’s,” LaPata said, noting Fred was a great guy they are happy to pay homage to.
